Next door neighbor to the guy I scored some red oak from back in February. See my thread All this huge oak is giving me piles...of wood! Huge remnants from two red oaks felled by the May 2018 tornado here. The neighbor had a tree downed (turned out to be a sassafras of size) in their woods. I inquired about it with the guy. Met them yesterday. Too overgrown now to get it. They had this mound of sugar maple remnants from trees downed in their yard. Said i could take them. GF went to RI to do girl stuff with her daughters today so i went here to do guy stuff. 16 months sitting as pictured, maybe 2/3 of the bark came off. Lady said i could cut on site so i did. Threw bark into woods. All different lengths so i cut my 16" pcs. Lots of nuggets/cookies but they are good for fire pit/shoulder season. The wood was well spalted and just a touch of punk here and there. Sugar doesnt last that long in round form unprotected IME. Not the greatest score, but convenient and just over 5 minutes from home. The lady came out and showed me another tree fallen near the side road which was way overgrown with weeds, prickers, vines etc. Turns out to be Hickory and off the ground, root ball and all...future late Fall score when all the weeds die off. The sassafras with rootball and off the ground too. There is a couple other big oaks farther down in their back woods but too much work to get them out. when i finished Tried the Fiskars to half the big rounds but too many whacks required so i had to noodle most. A few had gnarly grain. Wood was tightly stacked in the PU and turned out to be a heaping half cord. I had guessed a face cord. I like it when im off that way. I didnt jab any with the MM and will when i split it. I think it can be burned by January. 2 1/2 hours cut and load. Another half to unload. wood boring grub in some of the punky centers. All in all not a "typical" buZZsaw score, but it led to more great wood. Gotta take the good with the bad! If it was red oak i may not have taken it. I like oak but for some reason im tiring of it.
actually it wasnt too bad considering. A lot of the wood had seasoned and was lighter in weight. If this was oak, yup it wouldve grunted.
Looks like a good score from here. Wish I had it. May get some a small load of mulberry tomorrow though.
ive never cut or scored mulberry. Ive seen mulberry smalls at the dump years back which i never took as i didnt know what it was. FHC has taught me well! Thank you all! Post pics Stephiedoll , id love to see it.
about 800 miles 12 1/2 hours based on what i just looked up. If you leave shortly ill have lunch ready for you tomorrow! If im paying for gas can you tow that with a Prius? Does that have a winch in back or some type of hoist? I was gonna ask Woodsnwoods to bring his halftrack as he is closer!
Fuel might be a bit cost prohibitive lol. Yes, 3 speed winch with reverse. Old Jeep trans attached to a hydraulic motor. The "jib" is adjustable up & down with pins, but no crane. Front blade lifts high enough to use tongs to set the end of a log on the trailer & push it on. Bit crude, but it works.
Good score Brad. I hear ya about the oak. Gettin a little tired of the same old same old. I’ve got a little more ash to add to my stacks today. Sister had about 8 small ash taken down along her roadside today. I’ll start moving them off her lawn Tuesday. Maybe the Connecticut contingent should inquire about renting amateur cutters skidder for the winter? I’m sure we could cause much more mischief with a mini tank.
Of the 10-ish cords I have currently css'd, I'd say 80% is oak. Once I move my wife to rack to the deck, and fill it, I'll be filling the newly empty rack with more oak.
Didnt know how much wood was in the score so it looks like a load of nuggets and chunkies as i loaded those last. There is five tightly stacked rows of 16" rounds and quarters underneath.
Maybe half of my current wood is oak both red and white. I dont tire of white oak and should be cutting a bunch this Winter.
