x2 all around Something about equipment that I use, I feel better about it if I buy it broken and fix it and break it, then buying it new and breaking it. First pine tree any saw sees is instant nastiness that is a PITA to get out. You forgot big bore kit on that list.
I meant to put piston in that list. I went back and read it and seen I didn't have it on there (had a few drinks last night ) As for the transfer? No.. You can't feel anything on the jug. I'm still gonna hit it with 180 and 320. But it's smooth as a baby's bottom. The jug is good. Just needs a Piston/Ring. I thought about just running it as is, and then putting a 79 cc kit on when it finally chit the bed. But I'd rather fix it now and save the jug. If I decide to get a 79 cc jug for it, I will have this one to sell, trade, or keep as a spare.
Unless you go OEM on the piston, an AM windowed piston is hard to come by. Had been looking for the 'windowed' verstion of the 7900 piston for a while finally found a guy on the bay that had a Hyway version for $28 shipped. Came today and looks nice and feels a little lighter than the stock piston. Both the 73/7900s are closed port and when they first came out used a windowed piston, Dolmar has since changed to the slab sided piston in the 73/79 saws. Since the 6400 is OP and six of them to boot, IDK if the slab sided piston would work well in that saw.
Can you elaborate? We're you gonna close up one or more of the 3 open ports per side? Or try and fabricate a Closed port design? After looking at piston prices, I have now entertained the thought of a 79 cc kit or 84 cc kit
You are better off with the OEM 79cc C/P. IMHO, the 84cc stuff does not deliver the goods! One of my buddies on Chainsaw Repair was messing with the idea of the OP 6400 jug and a slab sided piston. You might go here and have a look. http://chainsawrepair.createaforum.com/index.php
The performance of the 84's have been a bit of a let down compared to OEM 7900... Not surprising though... Crank case is just too tight and runners are just too short to feed the 84cc to it's potential...
I've had the thought of making the 6400 a closed port myself. I have an idea how to do it but need a cylinder in hand to do it. Might make a heck of a 4 cube like that.
They sure are huge open ports eh? Tripple's at that... Might be some to gain by just rounding the corners and reducing the overall volume... But then...?? Maybe not...??
I'm with Cut4Fun, put a black top on it! Also check to see if the muffler is a cat, IIRC the 6400 had a cat muffler, If so ditch it and use one off a 73/7900 no cat to mess with and the 73/7900 is lighter and produces less heat. You realize that the 64/73/7900 series of saws (Dolmar or Mikita) are actually Solos do you not? Solo 665/675/681 respectively and the Solos have a 1mm stroked crank in them. As well as the Dolmar/Mikita 9000/9001 are actually a Solo 694
If anyone knows of a black top (both pieces), I would be interested in them as well. I wanted the back half to be black, just because of the better Filtration. The 6401 has a non cat (no case bolt), my 6400 had one, but has been split and cat removed. And they didn't call it Sachs/Dolmar for nothing
Sachs, back in the day used to make all kinds of small two stroke engines for small off-road race motorcycles like Dalesford, Zundapp and a bunch of others. Perhaps the early Pentons (Penton Bros. Honda, Lorain, Ohio) had Sachs engines.
I bought 2 ATV'S from them before they finally shut their doors. They were a staple in the area. My Father bought numerous bikes/ATV's from there as well. My very 1st ATV came from Penton on Cooper Foster Park Road A 1986 Honda Fourtrax 70 cc. I loved that quad. I was 5 years old and my dad had a 1986 Honda 200SX. Good times..
Nate Vansickel on Chainsaw Repair is a Dolmar dealer, in OH. Get in touch with him and he can order for you, he may have it in stock. All I have here is the filter cover.
Dexter, please post a picture 'end on' of the piston pin you took out of the 6401. I'll tell you what is going on after I see it. Also, has the 6401 been rebuild prior to you owning it?
It had to have something done to it, only because it was base gasket delete. No sealer, no gasket, nothing. Just clean steel on clean steel. But the jug, and piston are both OEM. So if they did rebuild it, they used the right parts, just lacked using anything to seal the cylinder. I am going out of town, and won't be home until Wednesday evening. So I will be on here very little (in case anyone send ms me a PM and I don't reply, I am not ignoring you. Out of town on business). I am leaving for Columbus shortly.
