Log tape

I guess I'm a lot more unsophisticated then Y'all,. I never use a tape, the small stuff I eyeball and the bigger logs I use the bar.

 

were not sophisticated, just OCD!

 

If I only cut for personal use, I probably wouldn't measure but I sell so I like to keep it as uniform as possible.

 

Ya I didn't think about wood for selling. No one wants to hear there wood is to short.

 

In the woods I use a Husqvarna (Spencer style) logger's tape. Depending on the location of the tree and whether or not I can skid it out without damaging other trees I will cut in 12' sections/increments. 12' is the minimum length that lets me process at 16", 18" or 24" without cookies.
I process limbs/peckerpole to 18" for the syrup evaporator on my cordwood saw so depending on diameter I'll cut to 108" (minimum) or 12' if I can handle it.
I also cut some trees for lumber so having the Husky tape attached to my vest allows me to be able to cut accurately based on what I'm doing at the time.

 

Hey Jo191145 which is a great choice in pistols by the way, I like your idea of welding a bigger tab onto the tape. I go to the mountains and cut wood and I always use a cheap tape measure and now you just gave me a way to improve that. Thanks.

 

Ok Jo191145 here are the two I did. A small piece of sheet metal and tig weld. One for the mountains and one for the wood processing area at home.

 

Looks good. Let me know how it works out.
Been debating in my mind wether some small spikes/points would help. Probably not needed and cause more blood loss than benefit.
Without spikes it can fit into a chainsaw kerf if the need arises.

I only have a stick welder. Not the best method. Good to know it worked with tig. Thanks.

 

My tape has this for a tip. It pokes into the wood so it stayes and releases when you tug on the tape. AND you can clean your bar groove out with it!

 

Those two tapes that I welded on were free from harbor freight with a coupon I had. I probably have 4 or 5 of them around here. I am cheap.

 

I love my Mingo market- only drawback is when you have a real knobby stick to buck and the wheel is a PIA. I have a loggers tape too but never use it correctly nor does it have regular increments.

I do that backwards Redneck. Drop the bar on the big end first as I always cut it wrong? but then just eyeball the rest of the way.
