This was a mixed load I got at auction today. Mostly locust but some ash ,cherry and oak. $70. I'll keep all the locust and sell the rest. Most in the 14-18% range.
Awesome! Half cord? Ive been to plenty of auctions, but have never seen firewood. Is it common in your area? Wish you hadnt mentioned locust as i dying to hit my score again. A fellow FHC member says ive come down with locust mania!
The only time I've sold firewood, it was 100% locust, 25 years ago. I had one buyer complain that I should have mixed in some wood that didn't burn as hot. Go figure!
I just got permission to go back to my locust score. I’d be surprised if I could get more than a trunk load or two home with my current bar, but there were some branches there too. Off topic, but I need to get some new bearings for the corolla. My brother in law was saying 80k miles is about right for some new bearings, but I think the car hoarding did them in.
Yes.. although some of the cord I got already was wider than the bar is long. I was switching sides on most if not all of the trunk cuts. Where the two trunks meet up I might need to noodle into thirds to lop off some more. I might borrow my neighbors 18” stihl. I put a new chain on it for him and haven’t run real quality control on my work yet.
I wouldn’t either, although I don’t think I’d pay for wood period, now that I’ve scrounged so much. I do like cherry though, both because it dries pretty quick and it cooks wonders with pineapple juice marinated pork chops or Salmon. I throw a split in with the charcoal on the Webber. Even for steaks minus the pineapple juice. Edit: oops already ranted about my cherry wood cooking on this thread
I've cooked over cherry a lot, nice mild smoke flavor, very similar to oak. As far as burning for heat, i burned a few cords of cherry over the last couple years. Very good heat like you said, dries fast doesn't seem to rot or even get fungus on it. BUT...i get 2-3x the ash. I bought a cord of locust my first year. And got a small pickup load last year. Very good heat, But im not going out of my way or paying a premium. Its just firewood...
I would t either nor would i ever pay for firewood. I think jrider has said he gets a premium for cherry. Folks like the smell of it burning around Christmas...if i remember correctly.
I think it was jrider. I also sell it for "holiday" wood. I also have a pyro senior lady that gets about 2 cord a year for her fireplace. She just loves the smell. She likes black walnut too because of the colors it makes when burning.
No, not selling, that sign is on my way home from work. I’d hate to think about how many cords a month I’d have to sell just to pay the pre-school costs for my two kids around here.
i didn’t notice extra ash with cherry, but I do get a lot of coals building up.. enough coals that it can be an inconvenience when trying to load up for the night. I was burning a fair amount of ornamental cherry, which is slower growing and could be higher btu.
That's the going rate for cherry here too. I guess if you're into parading your wealth (or credit card debt) ya gotta have it for the back yard ambience fire on the weekend. Me, I like the smell of white pine. If the cherry didn't grow so crooked here I'd mill what I have.
