This last one was done with the holder all the way back, and the arm all the way down. Lemme’ go and take some pics. Hang on.
id say your wheel angles are around 25 degrees or so for top plate ant atleast 24 on the side plate im at 20 on the side and 15 on top and arm stuff about midways for a 3/8 work chain
So dress the top plate “flatter” and the side plate “steeper”? I haven’t played much with the top plate dresser. Mostly with the side plate.
Sorry to have hijacked your thread. I hope you feel better soon, and get to use that grinder. We need some pics!
the good thing about these compared to the older 450 is the ability to have different set ups and accomplish the same cutter yours is not wrong and mine isnt completely right but yes id play with the side plate some to take out some of the forward lean and just make little tweaks keeping notes on each step and what works and what doesnt
your side plate doesnt have to be so thick i try not to get into the tie straps and remember the side plate cutting is controlled mostly by raker height
That’s kinda what I’ve been doing. I’m going to make a template, or something, that’s graded to make adjustments easier to record. I figured something for the dressers would be handy. But, then again, I could just record the degrees with the angle finder. Overthinking it. Lol Lol. Good point. That was the first cutter I ground with it. I agree, though, unnecessarily tall side plate and the wheel is easily too thick and easier to hit the straps.
lol when i first got my 450 and i got no help from anthony icepik randy and mike lee helped me get it set up the angle finder can be laid on the aluminum block holding the dresser or if dresser is extended can be put right on it zero it out close to the dresser on the motor plate the angle finder helps alot even if just for reference points you could use a scribe to mark the motor plate at the adjustment blocks if you want more than one wheel dresser angle
That’s exactly what I was thinking. I figured marks like 1-10 or 1-5, something like that. Just to make it easy to change the setup. What’s the difference between the 450 and the 451C? I know the newer one has more adjustments, but don’t know the specifics.
the 450 was a solid arm no pivot in the middle also there was 2 threaded holes for the chain guide to screw into instead of the slot on the 451
Ah, I see. Cool. Sounds like the newer one has much better adjustability then. By the way, I just ordered up an angle finder and a protractor. Should be here Thursday.
yes alot better and the angles i used on the 450 i still use on the 451 and just adjusted the arm into position when you get the angle finder you will see the grinder is easier to adjust
Thanks Jason. Like Dallas said, I think I’m close to where I need to be. Just a few tweaks here and there, and we’ll have a good set up. Been playing with it just kind of by eye and for fun up until now.
Everything you posted will cut like crazy. It boils down to durability and at some level, that doesnt matter much either since you can easily just grind them again!
Thanks Du-Hwane. That’s true. It’s fun to experiment with the different angles. I’m definitely still in the learning phase of everything, by a lot. Lol I’ve learned that I can get close to the same results with very different settings, just depends which combinations you put together.
I’ve had mine a while and am still in the learning phase. I want to set it and forget it, but there’s just no real way that is going to happen. Document your settings, then you can revisit. I have found a worn square, will still cut as well or better than run of the mill round chain. Knife edges get beat up in frozen dead oak, but still zing through green or soft wood.
