I have had this issue, the collar itself was bent. Prevented me from pulling it back far enough to allow the balls to fully retract. Look closely at the collar.

There does not appear to be a problem with the collar. It moves back and forth without issue. But I can not get the thing to go past the steel balls. I first started with 3-in-1 oil on them. They turn easily with my finger. But apparently will not depress to allow the shaft to go on all the way. I then sprayed with liquid wrench which says it is a penetrant. I have used liquid wrench on things with problems before and it works well. I guess I will spray it again this morning and let it set a while. I don't want to spend too much time on it again today. Lots of things to do today and it looks like it is going to be another nice one. I really doubt I am going to be able to get it to work. If I don't get it on today I guess I'm going to have to call them Monday morning and have them pick it back up or pick the shaft back up and fix it for me. I just bought it. pizzes me off that they could not have had an employee hook it up to one of the many tractors they have and make sure the thing functioned properly. As soon as they realized it would not go on the %&*$ing PTO shaft they would have said, "We can't bring it to him like that." Wouldn't that have been a simple thing to do? Instead of having me, their new customer, spend hours getting frustrated and pizzed off after I just spent $1600 on the mower that was in "excellent" condition!

Still could be something preventing the collar from retracting fully. When you talk to the dealer, be NICE, explain the problem and suggest they bring the front half-shaft from a new one to get you up and running. ;)

Those shafts and couplers can be a pain when dirty corroded or similar. I have spend 15 minutes trying to hook up before. Sometimes pushing a coupler the wrong way on a piece I have used numerous times before.

Got it! Can't believe it. I sprayed it again this morning and let it sit 4 more hours. I tried it again a little bit ago and the collar moved even further and it went on further, but still not far enough to lock on. So I messed with it some more, sliding it back and forth and prodding that collar, PIA! Then it went! Just like that. So I took it back off and put it back on. Then sprayed everything again and put it back on. P.I.A.! Poor design for the collar if you ask me, but I will keep it lubed up and covered up now. I think that is why it was the way it was. Prolly sat outside during that nasty azz winter we had.

Thanks for all your replies, I will post a few pics in this thread of some cutting. I need to get out of wood splitting in the heat for several hours this afternoon when it is the hottest. Good time to do some cutting.

It's cutting nicely. Yeah! This use to be a trail! Boy it is starting to look like a jungle in here in the three milder seasons. Tim to come through with the pile saw and widen things out, let the sun get in here and dry things out as well. Lots of wet spots.

Get you a can of spray grease with a straw. Jam the straw up under the collar in a couple spots and give it hell. ;)
