Concretegrazer: Thanks man, sure is nice to be finally sort of getting my process figured out and not make dumb mistakes quite so frequently. trx: That's a sweet setup and the straight grain on that fir is beautiful. Great pics!
Quick question for trx or anyone else who's done some work with doug fir. Like I mentioned, I'm planning to side my toolshed with the boards I'm milling. At first, I was gonna do board and batten style, but I'm now thinking I'll just butt the edges together and call it good. My reasoning is that since a good number of my boards are random widths, that might look funny with the battens not at even intervals. If I just butt the edges together, I think it will look good enough (it is just a tool shed after all). So my question is, should I leave a bit of space between each board to allow for expansion/contraction or butt them tight and see what happens?
if they are still wet ,butt together they will shrink some still ,i put some wet cedar on my shed ,it cracked when it dried on a couple boards ,a guy told me one nail in the top and bottom ,then let the batts hold the edges down ,allows for the boards to move more i guess ,if you can cut a cant like i did ,the width you want the boards ,can get a lot the same size ,but you waste more material ,i had made 2 passes before the first pic ,first one was all scrap bark ,second pass was 1.5 thick ,i can cut a couple 2x4 out of that ,the one on the trailer tounge ,then i cut my cants ,if have big enough log to get a 10-12 inch cant ,that would make nice siding with batts mhere is a pump house i did ,i sheeted with 3/8 plywood ,to keep it lighter ,but was able to tyvek it and have something to nail to ,this was all milled with a chainsaw ,on the norwood jig
That's some very nice work trx. Maybe what I'll do is just keep stockpiling my random width boards and when I have enough that are the same width, then I'll go the board and batten route. Thanks for the inspiration!
You can shiplap instead of board and batten. We did my uncles interior with red pine that way. You do waste a bit of your board cutting the shiplaps though.
You know what trx? Live edge just might be the way to go. Your suggestion reminded me of a youtube vid I watched awhile back. This guys got a great channel and his cabin is sweet. Check out the vid when you get the chance.
I always wondered how they got that edge look on the siding. Makes sense now when you see how it is done. I prefer that over board and batten siding as the water is always shed downward and not able to be blown under the batten. Our rain here is quite often horizontal. I noticed Gasifier left our names off the list of those who would be enticed out to work for food. He must think we are too "old".
Ha ha, yeah, I noticed the omission as well Woodwidow. I decided, since I'm new here, to give Gasifier the benefit of the doubt and take the high road. I'm finally getting close to getting the logs milled that I pulled down off the slope last week (or was it the week before?). As I posted before, the two 10' top logs got milled into 1" boards. A couple days ago, I milled the third 10' log into another 6x6 beam. It turned out pretty good, but not quite as consistent as the last beam. Still, plenty good enough. I'm getting ready to get the butt log onto the saw ponies this afternoon and plan on another batch of 1" boards.
Got sidetracked yesterday. My buddy who works for the railroad was working in the area and showed up unannounced with beer and pizza. Gonna try and get back at it today. It would be easier if my head didn't hurt...
Well, got sidetracked yet again. My neighbor called and needed a hand lifting more heavy things. Finished that with plenty of time for milling but then the same buddy who stopped in two days ago stopped by again...with beer and a rack of baby back ribs. Threw them on the smoker around 2:30 and pulled 'em off around 7:30. They were awesome! Here's the ribs after a couple hours. Didn't get a pic of the finished product...I wasn't quick enough! I did manage to get my log onto the saw ponies at least... Oh, and here's a pic of a funny "score" that I found up the hill behind my house. Proof, perhaps, that God has a sense of humor. Might just put it on my porch to scare off the Jehovah's Witnesses...
I have been missing this thread. Now I need to go back and catch up on it. Woodwidow, not too "old". I figured too experienced (aka-smart) to go that far for a cold beer and a little food. If I had to drive to the shore of an Island, then get on and take a ferry, then drive a considerable distance for said hanging food and beer, I think I would just stay home and tell Campinspector to bring me a cold beer and cook me up something nice. Now get to work on that Camp! ( I just went to the list of members and copied and pasted from the beginning on down for a bit, by the time I doctored and pulled the info out I didn't want that took me long enough.) I thought of what people may think with someone telling people they hang with ........ and then mentioning some of our group's "interesting" names! Besides, if it was for the reason you mentioned I would of had to leave Stinny and Woodlands out as well! That's what's nice about this place getting busier. Better chance of getting away with something like that!
Hi trx. sorry for leaving the thread hanging. I screwed up my shoulder about 3 weeks ago and that's kept me away from the milling (although it's been hotter than heck around here for the last week or so which hasn't helped my motivation). To answer your question, yep. I've got close to 200 board feet of my 1" siding stickered up along with two surprisingly good beams and 1 surprisingly bad beam. Was gonna just use the boards to side my tool shed, but the shed is such an eyesore that I think I'll eventually just raze it and build a new one. I've got an idea to re-do my porch at some point this summer or early fall so I think I'll save what I've got for that project.
