If you never heard/read about the beginning, it's all here - Oaks to come down...hopefully

It's been about 18months since we had those oak trees taken down.

With burning of wood so far this year, I was being forced to look at and growl at -

    A hoarder's nightmare - An empty rack!!

I've had a number of red oak rounds stacked. It was only a matter of time - Splittin' time! IMG_20191109_082049538.jpg

My redneck portable fire ring in the background. burning off a collection of sticks from around the woodyard.

From round - to split and stacked

    Attacking my nightmare-

    Working through it.

Small pile that wants to be played with by the chainsaw.

A quick stop by my poor man's sawbuck. All loaded. Will probably cut it up next week.

I always admire the look of recently split red oak.

    Just about finished -

    The last piece
    IMG_20191109_110017954.jpg
Split and loaded to be moved-

All stacked. I need to work on the covering. It's about a half-split too short. I have some other roof rubber scraps to keep water from draining down the cut face

There's a pile of other red oak splits that I'll move to top off this rack. There's 3 racks being covered by the roof rubber here. The covering might work better without a difference in stack height. I was estimating about 6cord of wood from those three red oaks.

It was nice to be out this morning with the temps in the mid-20's, swinging the x27, with classic rock tunes in the air.

I now need to rebuild my "inventory". I have yet another empty rack. Oh well... 'tis the season!

Nicely done  sir! Two sad sights...old rounds and an empty rack. Got a few i need to fill. Constant game of wood organizing! Not my favorite part of hoarding, but has to get done!
Do you have a scrounge lined up? Cut from your own place?

A 10 minute drive to my SIL's. She's the one looking to remove trees overhanging her yard and garden, including some real big red oaks. There'll be a tractor with chains and ropes attached, to get them to fall just right.

But, there's a number of smaller trees that I can fell, without more than the usual care. I'll probably do a walk around with her in a couple of days, and wrap some tape around the trees she wants down.

Great you can keep the oak pipeline flowing, and close to home too. Next summer?
You are sitting pretty with those six cords of oak!

Weather permitting, I'd like to start cutting and bringing back what I can, starting next week.

Like your front yard, I'd like to have an amount here, on hand, to fill racks as they empty over the winter months.

Let's see.... an hour plus vs. a 10 min ride, with my minivan.

    Decisions....decisions.
