Wow, there are all kinds of trailers when you get to thinking on it. But I need a long one. I've got three short ones, largest is 5x10. To carry firewood but also to carry equipment. I will eventually buy a tractor and bush hog. Right now, I have a John Deere Gator and a Honda Foreman ATV and I'd like to be able to haul them both on the same trailer. So, this requires length. I've love to have a dump bed but I guess that would have to be separate trailer, lol. I see used ones from time to time. But just thinking of a long utility trailer, say, 20 feet... what specs/features would you want? For instance, I'd like to be able to haul logs, not just rounds, and that means I need a winch of some sort. Any ideas? Any cool things you would want? To get the ideal, might have to buy new. I look online for used ones all the time, hard to find what you want. Thoughts... - width? - dual axles - weight rating - tire rating - brakes? - winch - toolbox - ramps - wooden floor? - length, what is maximum length? Thanks for any dream-on tips. The truck I'd pull this would be a 4wd 3/4 ton.
Well I'll try to give you some of my thoughts: You have the truck to pull a 10-12K trailer. You will have tandem axles on that size trailer. Length-16-20 feet, hRd to find any longer unless you go to 14K trailer. Brakes on both axles-required in many states and a good idea in all. Put a toolbox on the tongue. Wood floor if you are hauling logs-you'll dent the heck out of a metal floor.
Agree with above, 10-14K is good size. In PA it's more expensive to register over 10K. Ball hitch, not a pintle. Lots of stake pockets for tie downs and for removable sides. Rub rails are super handy. Deckovers are super sweet if you need/want to load skids or other cargo from the side. Buy as wide as you need and have room for. 16-20' is pretty standard , again, buy what you need. All things being equal, a longer bed weighs more so it reduces cargo cap. Definitely wood floor. This is a 10K tilt bed that I use for hauling equipment & cars. Could easily add a winch, but if I have to pull something up it I just park the skidder next to the truck & pull it on. Note the stake pockets & tie downs. I do have a 12' dump trailer as well. Yes to brakes on both axles & 10 ply tires as well.
Buy a trailer and a welder. You won’t find everything your looking for. If your pulling logs onboard you’ll want the winch a little higher than the height you intend to stack logs. Otherwise the cable/rope gets buried by the log butts. Most equipment trailers with winches have them mounted down low. Designed to pull just one machine onboard. You’ll also want to build some stake sides. Maybe not high sides but they help keeping things onboard and lessen any strapping required. Police are less likely to pay attention if the load looks secure and stable. Sides help. If you don’t get pulled over you don’t get weighed As someone mentioned. Always good to check your states trailer requirements for weight and taxes, fees etc. Sometimes 1 extra pound can cost you $$$. Had that happen with my mason dump. It was rated for 1 lb over the limit and incurred extra reg and commercial insurance because of it. Of course the state did it that way just to get extra money out of all the standard mason dump on the road.
As a worksaver I’m a big fan of dump trailers. Especially with logs. Easy to winch them on a flat trailer. Not as easy to get them off. Anything is possible but it’s a lot faster and neater to dump em. And they have a battery already installed to power your winch A thought I had when I first put my ATV on my 6’x10’ dump. Your right, real estate disappears fast. Never had the need to try it but it’s quite possible to build two short steep ramps in the front and drive the front end of your Honda right up onto the front rail of a dump bed. Possibly even let the front tires drop right over. Almost stand the thing straight up in the front. You’d want some low d rings to hold the rear down in case of emergency stops. LOL Just something to think about.
What is that equipment on the trailer called? Looks like a mini skidder. Have researched how to harvest trees (blowdowns, dying trees, trees to thin) on my land, that is interesting, looks smaller than a skidder.
We have a 7x12 10K dump trailer with ramps, it will haul 30hp Kubota with FEL. That is what we log and load wood with.
That's cool, is that the 30hp tractor? That one sure looks bigger than 30hp. Do you have any more pics of that trailer? Was it store bought or home made trailer? The trailer seems to be higher off the ground than I would expect but maybe it's just the angle. Looks like a real nice trailer. Are ramps built under or where are they? Thanks!
14-16ft dump trailer and weld a hitch to the back of it. Pull the 5x10 with the atvs loaded sideways behind the dump trailer. Tandem towing laws vary per state.
