Weber grill rehab

    image.jpeg was puttin the splitter away and snapped a pic of my rehabbed Weber grill. She is a redhead Genesis 1000 3 burner from '93 or '94. Picked her up on CL for 25 bucks with a half tank of propane. It was in working shape but pretty rough. Used it for a couple summers before I wanted a new grill, went to a big box store and a comparable grill was 800-1000; no longer wanted a new grill. Last spring I took it completely apart and cleaned and painted everything, got new stainless grates, burners are stainless so I just cleaned them up. Got new wheels and a tank scale. Had to replace some of the wood and then sanded and stained with a outdoor stain. Put everything back together with all stainless hardware. All in for just under 200 bucks and it should last another 20 years. I think it came out great and has a classic look that you don't see anymore. Thinking about buying another one and fixing it up for my brother in laws birthday gift.

    Great work! As usual, my eyes look at the picture before reading the post, and I thought, brand new grill, where can I get one that's red. Then read everything. Awesome restoration!

    Very nice job!
    We have a Weber silver and it's at least 15 years old. It's been a great grill and the ingiter still works. I think the only thing we've done to it is replace the shields over the burners. I wonder if the new Webers have the same quality as the old ones?

    hmm, good job on the grill. I would think in this neck of the internet there would mostly be charcoal grill owners...

    Nice grill! Stainless is the way to go. I have a charm glow - decent but its no weber. I had to replace the original burners and grates after 2 years - replaced them with stainless about 5 years ago and they're still in great shape.

    I have a charcoal grill too but the propane is nice for like a weeknight family dinner when you don't want to spend the time.

    I have the exact same grill, I purchased mine new in the late 80's or early 90's.
    I have re-done mine twice....lately when I look at it, I find myself saying....time to refurbish the grill again...maybe this spring.
    It came with a fold down work table on the left side. I added a extra burner on the right. Also put some cast iron cooking grates in it. (weber addons)

    Good job on the rehab g60!

    It's impressive how long those Weber's last! Growing up I watched my dad buy Sunbeams or whatever they were just about every 2 years. I eventually picked up a 90's era 2 burner Genesis for like $40 for him and it shows no signs of quitting. I eventually got one for myself once I bought my house. It's amazing how cheap you can find them used, and how expensive they are new!

    My Dad always bought Kenmore grills. About 12 years ago I splurged and bought a Weber Genesis Silver. Stainless body with 3 burners and a side tray pot/pan burner. So far just a replacement on the shields one time. Steaks have always tasted and looked better off this grill. Just a fact. Definitely something that is worth spending more on, just like a chainsaw.

    I've got a Weber round charcoal grill, and a propane grill too. They both have their pluses and minuses.

    The new Weber gas grills will last, but you have to spend a lot to get all SS burners, flavorizer bars and grates.

    My old pos Aussie gas grill lasted about 10 years. About 5 years in, the burner needed to be replaced. Did that, then the flame shield thing rusted out. I got SS scrap from work formed it and drilled 8 billion holes in it. That outlasted the grill.

    I was in the same position as g60gti and didn't want to spend a ton of $, but I needed a bigger grill.

    I ended up getting a new 5 burner SS char broil with side burner at the end of this summer for $170. It sure works well. I'd say as well as the new weber Genesis I used at a friends house.

    I grilled up tandoori style chicken kabobs with naan tonight after work. It was about 10° out. It worked great.

    If I got 10 years of of a crappy non SS Aussie grill, I'll get that out of this grill.

    Around here, those Weber's like g60gti restored go for $75 in original not so shiny shape.

    As for me, it looks just super, as if it had just been brought from the store. I tried to restore my old grill to normal appearance, but I only made it worse and in the end it was not suitable for use. Now I think about which one is better to buy gas or charcoal grill ᐈCheck it out! Best Gas Grills Under $200 in December 2018 - 2019 what do you think about this guys?

    This is a timely thread for me, I have a Webber Genesis, purchased for me in 2001 by my then girlfriend. It has been outdoors in New England since then - covered, well used and taken care of since then. I had to buy a new cover two years ago, and this year finally had to buy new burners, grates and flame bars - prob $65 for cover and $100 for the afore mentioned parts. Original sparker not sure how. Maybe its an anomaly, just my experience - and I don't have any bias or stake in anything #simpleman. My now wife of 18 yrs and now my 8 yr old daughter now eat off and have to hear this story periodically. Outlasted 2001 Ford F250, my cat April 2001-Nov 2018, and in better shape than the 2001 me.     Digging up a oldie here! Thanks for the compliment, I’m somewhat attached to the old redhead.

    Honestly I’d do another rehab again if my budget was 200. It wasn’t hard at all and I have a brand new quality grill that would of ended up being thrown out. I get that not every one has the desire, time, skill, whatever it may be to do that though.

    So as far as your question it depends on what your going to do with the grill. If your only going to cook on weekends, kicked back with a few beers then nothing beats charcoal, but it is more time consuming. If you plan to cook a lot of weeknight dinners for the family a gas might be better as it’s quicker. I know they make combo gas/charcoal grills but don’t really have any experience with them.

    Whatever you do at the minimum get a quality cover for it and even better keep it in a shed or garage if possible. I have 5 different outdoor cooking apparatus, some store bought some homemade. Luckily I have space to store them out of the elements so I’d expect them to last quite a while.
