Almost done replacing the cedar panels on our picket fence. The old one was painted white and now we're not sure if we should paint the new one white or stain it cedar color. The problem with the paint is that it peels and looks like crap very quickly.

Go with the stain first. If you don't like it, then you can always slap a coat of paint onto it, no?

heck, you may even make some $$ off it if you are enterprising enough.....!

Oil base semi transparent stain imho.

If you go with paint, Prime it with oil primer first. Then it won't peel. If you use latex primer, or latex paint with no oil primer, the knot holes will stain thru brown....no matter how many coats you use.

I like how the new portion looks now - just do a clear protectant and be done with it.

I'd go with a transparent stain for sure.

Thanks everyone. Appreciate the input. I can always count on you guys for good advice. We've been busy trying to get this all finished and I've been off the iPad. We are definitely leaning toward a transparent or semi transparent stain. The white takes too long to fade to where it isn't blinding. We kinda like the wood look better now that we see it. I'll have to strip the posts and maybe replace one of the gates. Yesterday, I ordered some stain samples from Ready Seal in TX. Should be here on Friday. Their stain appears to be the easiest to spray and re coat as time goes by.
