I've made a trap like savemoney described only I used a 5 gallon bucket. Works good. I found that dumping a bit of vegetable oil into the water makes enough of a film on the water to help keep the stink down if you can't check the trap for a while. I've also used rat traps, but I screw the trap to a 2x4 scrap. I've lost too many traps with chipmunks that have enough left in them to drag the trap away in their last moments. Neither of those methods will earn you the PETA man of the year award, but once those bastages ate the seal off the bottom of my garage door, all bets were off.
Well, bad news on the "ammo". The shells are too long. In my excitement, I just thought for sure they'd fit. I'll have to see if they'll take 'em back or sell on one of the "garden gun" type forums. Bought a little Co2 BB pistol, and got 3 today. Powerful little thing, and I'm getting pretty accurate.
The place I got the ammo from sent me an e-mail yesterday asking how things went with the order. I took that as an opportunity to ask about an RMA. Very quick response with an RMA #, and a question about the gun. Now, all I need to do is make a trip to the big citay and find a UPS store.
You betcha. Imma stop at the HD store while I'm there and pick up a couple 2x4's too. Beat that.....if you can.
I dispatch any and all chipmunks with a ruger 10-22 from my sniper post (spare bedroom window). Now that I have them under control, I only have to deal with a few new tenants every spring. Hot tip - chipmunks love strawberries.
So, now I'm strongly considering a 22 rifle. Local gun shop took a look at the "garden gun" and found a crack. Good thing I got the wrong ammo. Need some ideas on an inexpensive gun. Would something else work better for varmint control and general plinking fun?
Had one digging tunnels around my well, and didn't want him chewing up things there. Got a rat trap, hot-glued some sunflower seeds together. No more tunnels.
My ruger 10/22 does an excellent job of dispatching them. I get rid of any new ones every spring and don't see any again until the next spring and then it's usually no more than 3, if I get them early enough.
The chipmunks have dug under my patio made of 6 in cement tiles. Now some of them are sinking down or very uneven, all in rows. Now will have to dig them up, put in a new base and reset them.
Ok, now I need info on ammo. I have a possible line on a Marlin 795. Any brand work? Brand preference?
The low noise 22lr( sub sonic) style ammo will not cycle an auto loader unit. You can still use them just got to manually cycle bolt. I have various air rifles that will do the job including those masked Banditos. None of them are spring powered though. The pump up Benjamin in .177 or better .22 will do the job further out than that pistol. lot cheaper on the projectiles as well. In powder burners I prefer bolt action, have those in rifle and pistol configurations. I have a deep large Ravine behind me- dang thing acts like a high powered audio amplifier complete with reveberation. That said the CCI " Quite Zone" ( .22 LR, 720 fps, 40 gr slug) are not to bad out of the 16" barrel on my Thompson Center Contender frame ( single shot pistol). Little bit quieter out of the old t bolt rifle ( 22" barrel). Mostly use the rat traps for chippers, like the idea of the glued down sunflower seed. wonder if they would go for squash seeds?
I use a single shot pellet rifle to get rid if the pests like chipmunks and mice, but I also use it for small game like rabbits and squirrels at ranges up to 25 yards. It's profile is about the same as a rifle or shotgun, but a lot lighter. I've also used it to give deer a shot in the butt to try to dissuade them from coming on my property, but that didn't work so well. Edited to add: It's black, not pink!
