This is the Beech that we were going to get last week, I think between the 50 foot cable and the cable on the winch (75 ft ?) I can reach this, I want to try on winching it out first. I will be doing this from a safe distance. The third picture is a dead standing Beech which I can get some good wood.
That beech hopefully will not be a beech to pull down. You know what your doing, so ill be looking for pics in the coming week!
I'm going for the end that's broke off, I'll use a rope with a weight on the end to throw over the Beech, attach the cable to the rope and then pull the cable up over the Beech, once I get the cable pulled over I'll throw the rope under the tree down the hill, I'll then pull one end of the cable through the other end, pull tight and hook up the winch to the cable. Those are the plans after looking at it about three time, I will take a chain just in case I need more length.
We'll see how my arm is, if I can't get it over and down the hill enough to work safe then we'll leave it.
I took it that he meant his throwing arm, to get the rope up & over the snag. ? ? Was expecting pics soon of the successful downfall of the son of a beech
Beech is great stuff in the stove, dries fairly quick too. Heavy though... Careful taking that mess down.
During the ice storm of 1998 I was walking outside to the curb when I slipped (I never fell) but my right arm went up real quick and after that I could never throw a baseball or softball like the old days, I think it was a small tear. I'll have enough to make the throw.
I did buy another 25 feet of cable just in case I need it. We did decide to plant some acorn squash, six plants so that will be work for Sunday.
Everything went like we planned, all the work to get it down was done at a safe distance. We used about 75 feet of cable and we almost maxed out on the winch cable but the tree came down on the second pull (the first pull was to tighten up the cable) it stuck in the ground so we did a third pull to bring it all the way down. It's all split up with some Beech that I left back in last summer, the Beech we brought down was all good except for a few rounds. The last picture has three good size bolts tapped up in heavy plastic (doubled) taped up and then taped up to the rope.
Nice. Where are you located? I have access to a metric azz load of cable. Would be glad to hook you up with some if you are at all near Minnesota. -Dan
