    From a rookie.
I'm giving serious consideration to building a mill.
So... what's the longest bar that it is PRACTICAL, not just possible, to run on my 290?
This bar would pretty much be for milling only.
The power head is bone stock, and runs great.
    Thanks,
    YHC.

I ran a 290 for a few years and a 20" buried in oak was about all it wanted to take.

And that's crosscutting/bucking. Milling/ripping takes more power & is a bigger strain on the saw as well as the operator.Max a 290 could mill would be 16". My first milling saw in early 90's was a then-new Pro Mac 610,a strong 60cc powerhouse.Could pull 24" bar buried in local hardwoods all day,but was sluggish when milling anything over 18"-20".

I have never milled before, but I do have a couple 290's i don't think any thing over 16 bar would be good.a simple MM mod really wake's those saw's up. I suggest you look into that.any way have fun with your project and be safe. I think other people will chime in here and give much better advice.

You're gonna definately want something bigger to mill.....a would think at least in the 70-90cc range would be good for most applications. An MS460 would be a good saw for milling with a 25" bar, I think I'll be building my 076 (111cc) specifically for the mill I just got off of Trundle. I'll put a 36" bar on that.
