    Almost looks like some kind of mortising/pocketing axe......very cool. Wonder how many barns/log homes that thing helped build?

    Don't take my word for it, just what I think it may be. Also could be some kind of a shipwright axe.

    I agree with Scotty. Early axes were made with a iron pattern folded over and there was no poll. The sweep in the head throws me as mortise axes are usually straight. This one has a poll and looks like it has been struck quite a bit. It is a nice piece. Any top pictures? I am curious if it was folded.
