Can you guys post pics of your workbenches and shelving? I need some ideas... I fell into a sweet deal that I couldn't pass up on and bought a 52" tool chest combo. I don't have room in my current layout and want ideas. Thanks Pete
I started building some cabs in the shop, but got stalled..... I need to build some benches and get my outfeed/work table setup too. Sounds like a real nice tool chest deal.
I've got a few posts in this thread that show my work bench and shelving in the shop. http://firewoodhoardersclub.com/for...ch-on-an-escalara-stair-cat.6500/#post-155329 I also use 2 sets of saw horses and some 2x4's screwed together and a piece of 3/4 plywood for bench tops for mobile work benches so I can arrange the shop depending on the work I have in it.
I am considering a freestanding bench I can walk around... I'm using the winter to do the building of the new layout... Since I acquired a kerosene shop torpedo I can heat it for a fraction of what propane was costing me and it is thermostatic taboot! My garage is roughly 25' by 28' inside and my workbench tool area is about 25' by 10' because the blazer gets put inside the garage most of the year. I'd like it to fit my k1500 but that's a stretch in the best of times..... Your upper shelf looks like a winner of an idea for my hoarding problems.Im gonna give that some real thought!
so you have a big tool box and no where for a shelf or workbench huh, well here is what I did originally. I had some pallet racking that I put overtop of my tool box for extra storage.... Its the only picture I have, sorry. need a ladder to access the stuff on top. I had two shelves up there for stuff. makes a way to store things above that would normally not be used. then i used some more pallet racking to make a long workbench with storage underneath: so along one wall is 17' of usable workbench space, and storage underneath.. best part was all the pallet racking was free from work, I just had to cut it down to a usable width. I was still in the building stage with this pic, as I was and still am in the process of redoing the garage, and had other work benches and shelves that I got rid of. it now looks like a train went through it after a tornado hit it. going to be awhile before its back i order and presentable.
You could make the same thing out of some 2x4's or 4x4's for legs and pallets on top of your box. I then use a small roll around rubbermaid cart that I made a top for that serves as a mobile tool/work bench
No problem is I built my benches over the old tool boxes and made them built ins lol... Now I have two huge benches and a massive box plus three smaller boxes and two top chests.... Ugh the burdens of not enough tools and not enough storage for my huge pile of tools which is still never enough lol.
ahhh....well top chests on the work benches. then if there is old bottoms, make a top for them and bolt them together for a mobile bench...
My shop is pretty messy at the moment, but here's the layout in a panoramic pic. I'm lucky in that I have a dedicated work area to the side of the garage that's 10'x22'. The red and black toolboxes at both ends of the picture actually face each other but the panoramic mode makes it look a little funky. You can't see it, but behind the red toolbox is a metal shelving stand 5' tall filled with anything that comes in a can or bottle (paint, lubricants, cleaners, glues). Along the back and side wall (where the posters and drill press are) I'm going to build some shelves on the wall to clean up things that I keep on the floor that you can see under the chainsaws, as well as various junk that's taking up table space. I'm also planning on putting up pegboard below the shelves to hang some tools I want to get out of my tool box, like my hammers and measuring devices (squares, levels, tapes, calipers) because both of my tool boxes are full at the moment with no room for anything else. I'm hoping once everything is cleaned up to turn the shorter bench into a reloading station.
The only picture I have right now. I built my favorite ever work bench. The top is a full sheet of plywood two layers thick. It rolls around to wherever I need it. Stout enough to walk on or put a ladder on.
Here's my tool cabinet, more woodworking than machine/metal. Made from freebee "short" scraps from a local lumber mill. He was going to burn them in his kiln if I didn't take them.
That's nice...But I see a little droop in the shelf....That also happened to my wifes.........over the years!
droop is O.K. wait till she starts tripping on them. I like workbench and drawers, cabinets. the stuff on shelves gets to dusty.
