Decided to hit an old score i havent worked despite the humidity. Found this back in February and only cut two partial loads from it. Found a Stash of Roadside Ash!
Took the 028 for a change. Nice place to pull in and park safely. Cleared, cut and loaded for hour and a half. Wood buried under brush and covered with old poison ivy. Pic before i started. Couple gnarly knotty trunk chunks i left. Hard enough to get what i took. IMG_2635.JPG Got pretty overheated even though i had water.
Im resting eating a quick bite, cars stops and asks if i want more wood. "It was cut three weeks ago and guys have been taking it, maple". Now im envisioning some gnarly big chunks left plus scraps etc. He lived five minutes away so i went to take a look with the AC blasting in the PU. Short break.
Cha-ching. Straight grained sugar maple trunks right in his front yard. Asked if i could cut some right away to which he said yes. Fresh clean wood and nicer than the dirty ash i was cutting. Bucked several and took some short skinnies. Forgot the Isocore at the first cutting and halved them with the X27. Had to noodle a couple in half. Got too overheated so left with what i had cut, went back to grab the Isocore and a stump log. Neighbor across the street comes over and gives me a water and we chatted it up about firewood. Complimented me on my hard work. I Left and a starts pouring just down the road. Camera wouldnt work so no pics of sugar maple yard. I think the truck cab was too hot for it?
This load 3/4 ash, 1/4 maple.
Ill go back ASAP to buck the sugar maple. Need cant hook to roll one. Nice stuff IMG_2638.JPG IMG_2639.JPG
Rain stopped so i split some before and after supper. IMG_2640.JPG
    Whats left to process IMG_2641.JPG

Worst thing you can do while working in the heat and humidity is to tease yourself with even a few minutes of ac. To me, it just makes the heat that much worse

In 30+ years of working in the heat, a lot of that on the roof, ive never been able to take it very well. When im working i have a tendency to go B2TW as well rather than pace myself. Today was the first really sticky day so i havent adjusted to it. Plus i forget im 52. I stay hydrated with lots of water. Used to drink lots of gatorade, but never seemed to help.
The AC in my PU doesnt work that great anyhow. The guy stopped just as i was breaking for a quick bite so even the rest was good. Got to his house and back at it i went. Half the time i was in the shade luckily.
Give me temps in the 20's and ill go all day no problem...maybe a coffee or two.

I drive by some logs by the roadside that I'd love to go pluck. The only thing I question is whether I need to go talk to the homeowner that is nearby. Many of these logs are rather large and have been sitting there for a long time.

I found one yesterday that is at an intersection with no house close to the intersection. The diameter is probably a good 25-30 inches. I'd have to buck and split it right there.

There is one tree that fell over on someone's property edge that is still on the stump. I know these can be dangerous, but it's a good looking tree. The homeowner has left it for over a year. The only thing is that I'd prefer not to deal with the limbs. I'd cut them smaller to make them manageable for the homeowner to dispose of them. Honestly, I don't know what the protocol is here.

Yes sir! It never hurts to ask. Then come to an agreement & stick to it, do as little brush removal as possible, it sucks up a lot of time. I'll make burn piles for people if I get a tractor on the site, I charge to chip.

Best thing is to ask boettg33 . I prefer to get the okay, but sometimes its not always possible/practical. (who do i contact etc). Cutting and splitting are common for me now roadside. Couple years ago id just grab n' go what i could.
I wood is cut and right near the road its a free for all. Farther in then i ask.
Keep the extra work to a minimum IME. You are doing them a huge favor and saving them money by cutting and taking the wood.
In this case the ash has been there since last Fall. No houses in a stretch of woods.
The maple was offered to me.
If its too dangerous then i dont touch it.
    Hoard safe my friend!

Sorry, but even if wood is close to the road it belongs to someone. If you do not have permission to take it, then it is WRONG! Ask first. If you can't contact someone, it still does not make it right to take.

Do the right thing, because it is the right thing to do.

Hey Buzz, tell me... where the heck do you store all the wood you scrounge? The whole state of Conn. is not big enough! :D

Went back this afternoon for more wood. I get there and go to gas up. Forgot to fill my one litre bottle i use for mix. Only enough for half tank. So cut what i could. Forgot the cant to roll this trunk too. Tried by hand and couldnt. IMG_2645.JPG Tree service left brush, why i dont know. Some logs underneath. I asked the guy and quoted to haul brush away. Some skinnies too. IMG_2646.JPG IMG_2647.JPG
Guy had a sign that fell over. I didnt do it! IMG_2648.JPG
Overgrown fenced in area right next to my PU. Had to fight the fence, vines and PI to get wood. Saw ran out of gas while cutting here.
    IMG_2649.JPG
Half a PU full. Great day to be out making firewood. 261 had the cutting fun today!:saw: IMG_2654.JPG IMG_2655.JPG
Split it all when i got home and added to the rest of the stack. IMG_2656.JPG
Still more to get and may go back tomorrow to get the rest. He'll let me know about brush hauling too.

Looks like you earned that load. Maybe you can make a little $$ hauling the brush.

I shouldve phrased it better. I am in no way encouraging stealing here. My apologies to you, boettg33 and the forum. Ive spoken with many tree services when wood is roadside and they state the wood is property of the tree service and anyone can take it. Ive spoken with the owner of the tree service that has the contract of my old home town and he states the same, unless landowner has posted a sign which the TS is supposed to tell them to do if they want it. I will almost always get or try to get permission to take the wood. A blow down or wood farther off the road is another question. All depends how bad one wants the wood and in my case its REAL bad!
