I finished splitting the rounds of Yellow Birch we had left, I finished the Yellow Birch stack (not pictured) and the rest went into the Sugar Maple stack. Pic 0066-001 is the Yellow Birch stack. Depending on the weather, it looks like I'll be done cutting hardwood by or before the end of May.
I noticed that today in our area too, thanks. It's time to pick some wild leeks, the crop is very good this year.
That is good looking wood, we don't have that species here. We do have a blood sucking black fly we call Buffalo gnats. They are TERRIBLE this spring.
I need to get some of that Yellow Birch. Cut. Split. Ready to stack. Or, stacked too. Nice work, great looking stacks thewoodlands
The only native birch we have in this area is the River birch and they are only found in the river bottoms. They are not very good firewood, low BTUs
This is the best wood we have on our lot, it's small but it throws some nice heat. Hop Hornbeam (Ironwood) Ostrya virginiana 4,250 26.4
zap, the kid who's bringing me firewood is going to add some Birch and Ironwood to the mix. I'm looking forward to burning something different. Is there a lot of Birch on the property? Oh, and where's the Leek thread?
Not a lot but we do have some decent sized Yellow Birch. I'll get a picture of the Leeks when I pick some. You'll like both but the Ironwood you'll really like.
yeah iron wood is definitely top shelf! I grab some car trunk load when I go to farm.. I also know my saw dealers and when people call complaining about wood that kills chains etc.. I go check it's normally iron wood.. will dull an Oregon chain quick!
I know a lot of the terms (names) are some what regional, I have a good bit of (what we call) Hornbeam. It seems to only get to about 8-10" that I've seen. Bunches of Yellow Birch, both have a real good btu rating.
That does it thewoodlands. Seeing the lean on those wood stacks and seeing those funny looking trees at the ends of the piles (they are green with white tops), I need to get out there and build some ends for you. It's on our list of things to do.
What took you so long Canadian border VT? We've had them already for about 10 days. Maybe they are lazy out there and slept in?
