Had a guy drop off his almost new pp 5020 av that got pinched while felling a tree. So as I have it in the shop I will see just how she can run.

I will at least do a video review. I did get the bar and chain freed up but he didn't do it any favors.
The Oregon vangard chain is kinda interesting.

The 5020 is a clamshell. The muffler mod does help it though. It is also a strato saw so not an easy saw to port.

I didn't know they were a clamshell. Scratch the gasket delete. They can still have the ports massaged though.

I tried to modify one by porting and bringing up the compression. I messed up on it and it would not run for crap. I bought another cylinder knowing what mistakes I made but have not got around to working on it again.

Ya I found she responded well close to a 3000 idle. Not sure max I found she cuts real good just a hair on the rich side. Which is odd alot of stratos like a bit lean

I'm not sure there is much you can do to improve compression. The ports can be widened some to help it breath better. I did a ms 180 like that. I got decent gains over just the muffler mod.

Widening the intake port was one of the things I did wrong. Because it is a strato design the piston has some special machining done to it and when I widen the intake port a little I got into the maching on the piston. You can widen the intake but by very little. I was going to move the pockets for the bearings and seals up by .020" for the compression but I think I took it to far and created an air leak. I have done this before on a Poulan 295 and the saw turned out great but on the 5020 I need to use a little more patients on it next time.

Yes I wasn't able to widen the intake on the 180 much as its a strato as well. I was able to get the exhaust a bit wider though. It was a fun little saw, but the clamshell design makes you work hard for a little bit of gain. Never worked on a 5020.
