This picture is from 2015 and the winter was a warmer one, once you start getting some pictures from this year you can post them. Predicting Winter Weather: Woolly Bear Caterpillars
Usually, people that stop in and jawjags with 99 at her job will make a prediction of a very cold or very snowy winter....sometimes both. I don't think all her "forecasters" have ever said it will be a mild winter. I wonder what forums they belong to?
Get your best of the btu wood ready for some serious bitter cold, -30 to -40 coming in for this winter in your and our area. I hope that Oak is ready.
I was at the Post Office earlier today, some people here are starting to have problems with their wells because of the lack of rain. They're calling for a cold front coming in on Friday night with some possible showers. An upper level trough of low pressure will be exiting the region today, with at most an isolated shower. High temperatures will return to seasonal normals today...then a pronounced warmup takes place Wednesday through Friday with above normal temperatures expected. This time period should also remain dry as an upper level ridge of high pressure moves in. The pattern will change late Friday night into Saturday morning as a cold front moves into the region and bring showers and thunderstorms to the region. Cooler and drier weather returns for the weekend.
I hope your area sees some rain soon. Wells going dry and the threat of fire is no good. We were very dry (here in Pa) until about a week ago, when days of storms came through with tons of rain. Major flooding a couple hours south in Maryland a few days ago. I think we'll see a colder and wetter upcoming cold season. The wooley bugger will show his colors soon.
I hope you are right, I'd love lotsa snow this year. As far as rain it poured here last night sump pump a runnin.
Albany is a dump as well as several surrounding cities. Infrastructure is failing everywhere. 3 times in the past month raw city sewage has leaked into lakes rivers and streams. It happened to the Mohawk as well. We are not a flood prone area so no flooding, but my smart phone stupidy alerted me at 2:30 am that there was a flood warning! I believe the year averages out as far as precipitation, maybe you guys will make up for precipitation with feet and feet of snow!
We've had some really wet Septembers in the past, one year in September we had so much rain over a weeks time, it took out 4-5 bridges in the area.
We get those temps every single winter. I cannot remember a winter when it doesn't get that cold.....
I am sure someone posted this before. This thread reminded me of it. It was October and the Indians on a remote reservation asked their new Chief if the coming winter was going to be cold or mild. Since he was a Chief in a modern society he had never been taught the old secrets. When he looked at the sky he couldn't tell what the winter was going to be like. Nevertheless, to be on the safe side he told his tribe that the winter was indeed going to be cold and that the members of the village should collect firewood to be prepared. But being a practical leader, after several days he got an idea. He went to the phone booth, called the National Weather Service and asked, "Is the coming winter going to be cold?" "It looks like this winter is going to be quite cold," the meteorologist at the weather service responded. So the Chief went back to his people and told them to collect even more firewood in order to be prepared. A week later he called the National Weather Service again. "Does it still look like it is going to be a very cold winter?" "Yes," the man at National Weather Service again replied, "it's going to be a very cold winter." The Chief again went back to his people and ordered them to collect every scrap of firewood they could find. Two weeks later the Chief called the National Weather Service again. "Are you absolutely sure that the winter is going to be very cold?" "Absolutely," the man replied. "It's looking more and more like it is going to be one of the coldest winters ever." "How can you be so sure?" the Chief asked. The weatherman replied, "We're sure it's going to be cold because the Indians are collecting firewood like crazy!"
Picture 9255 is from 9-22-2015 and the second picture is from today 9-26-17, we'll see how the winter turns out. There's more black in the body of this year's Woolly Bear so maybe just enough snow & cold that we can use the sleds.
We're do in our area for more snow and cold but mother nature controls that so we'll just be happy with the cooler weather coming in.
