I'm going to be getting a progress hybrid stove this summer, I was just wondering how many cords of wood most of the owners on this forum are going through with that stove in a year. Obviously there are a lot of variables to that question but I'll be heating about 2,400 ft with well seasoned hardwood. Just trying to get a feel for what I can expect. I wouldn't say I'm going to heat exclusively with wood, but I would guess that we will heat about 80% or better with wood.

    I'd plan for 4.5 cords.

Real cold days 80,000 BTU probably won't be enough.
But on those days where the temp differential between inside and outside isn't so extreme it should keep up.

    4-5 cord sounds reasonable.

We put about 8 cord per year through it. Big drafty farmhouse, and our own woodlot. More infiltration sealing planned this summer. Maybe 150gal of heating oil used this year, too.

My bet is you'll burn less than you thought it would take. Still, 2400 sq ft, probably 5 cord or more.

Use these numbers and add some every year, in case there's a nasty winter. Always gooder to have more.

    Welcome Lakeside ..
I got IS about same size as PH.. 5 cord is what I plan on really depends on how your house is insulated and set up

We burn the Progress early in the season and let it burn out. It helps take the chill out of the house and lets me get my wood burning addiction satisfied. Shoulder seasons and the main burn season totals about 5 cords or so. Our house isn’t the best sealed log house around.

Thanks everyone. I was figuring around 4-5 cords. I'm looking forward to getting into the first year. Some of the reviews online make it sound as if the stove makes wood . I am looking forward to running it though.

5 cords of what. Cottonwood or hickory makes a huge difference. It might only burn 5 cords but you would be wise to put up 10-15, to get on the three year plan. You want 3 years worth of wood ready every fall. Just replace what was used the year before. This allows for all sorts of bad things to happen but you still will have heat!

Highbeam I agree with you. I mainly burn oak, maple and Ash. Right now I have about 16 cords put up and will have 20 once I process what I have on the ground. Nothing comes in until it sits for 3 years.

We would have had a PH if front load were available. It is a very handsome stove! As it wound up we got the Ideal Steel instead, and heat exclusively with it. Too early to offer a full season's tally on wood usage, but I can offer that the controllable nature of the hybrid will allow you to conserve wood if needed, or run it like a forge if you want 80 inside when it's -10 outdoors.

Low output is easy, let the cat light, get the temp where you want it, then dial it way back and cruise for 12hrs with no visible flame. High output needed - just let it settle in higher and keep it there with cat and secondaries both throwing heat.

Another beautiful thing - I will assume the PH works this way also - is that when the deep cold comes the stove turns into a werewolf and WANTS to run like that. It's really fascinating to see the reaction of the stove to different temperatures outside.

Perhaps some of those reviews got results like we did. From burning 6-7 cord per winter and still being cold in the house we went to 3 cord and 80 degrees in the house when we went to the Fireview. Progress could very well see the same type of result as it is even more efficient than the Fireview. I also really like the cook-top on the Progress.

We're wrapping up the first year of burning our Progress Hybrid to heat 2400 sq ft. The house is very well insulated, and we burned roughly 2.5 cords this past year. During the coldest period the stove ran continuously, but in the shoulder season the fire is made every morning and add enough wood to bring the house from 65 F to 72 or 73, and then let it go out and cycle repeats.

Were you burning an EPA stove before, or a pre EPA? What model? Just curious, sorry in advance for the hijack.
