Someone just posted recently, last couple weeks, about gouging out a spoon. Seems like it was in a general thread though. Did you see that one or was it you? Lol

My dad is an avid carver and makes lots of spoons and scrapers. Here’s one he made from a tree we processed for firewood.

2 other pieces we recently got from him.

This was a horse chestnut my friend had taken down and I cut it up and hauled it to dads for firewood. When we split it open, it was beautiful. Dad made a bunch of stuff from it and gave a bunch of pieces away to his carving club friends.

Those are nice! My wife wants some new wooden utensils, and all the ones we're finding in the stores are made in China or whatever other craphole. I've always wanted to do woodworking just never had time or someone to learn from.

I told her maybe I could make some spoons/Utensils. She gave me half the answer I was expecting....she says "ok yeah you can do that...in your spare time..." I think she means she wants the spoons soon, not in a year or so....

So if he's in a carving club, he's really into it I assume. Does he do it all by hand tools, or does he use any power tools as well? That horse chestnut looks nice!

100% hand tools. Next time I get over there, I’ll take a couple pics. He has a bunch more and offers them when family visits.
That tree was starting to spalt, so timing was just right to take it down. There’s still lots of splits in the pile and he’s picking out choice ones. Everyone loves it for ease of carving. I gave him pieces of cherry, mulberry and honey locust but they were all too hard to cut. He’d need power tools to use em and he’s not going that route.
Have you any access to instagram? Here’s a really neat account containing lots of carving.
    David & Michelle Rauenbusch on Instagram: "Hollowing out a kuksa in fresh birch is a very enjoyable experience. . . #creativityfound #maker #handcrafted #selfemployedlife #handcarved #woodenspoon #selfemployed #spooncarver #sloyd #handmade #asmr #theartofslowliving #melukerdeecountry #makersgonnamake"

EDIT: in case you cant see that link.
