I thought I'd start a thread just for showing off turning projects and the like. There seams to be done interest so we'll see how it goes. Here's my latest. Did it while grilling pork chops tonight. I'm pretty sure it's yew.
Great idea for a thread Jeff. A few years ago I rebuilt a fiberglass rod that was once belonged to my grandfather's brother. The handle is from a piece of cherry tree from my grandfather's property. I turned all the cork rings to size when it was all glued up. We have caught and released quite a few stripers with this set up. It is a differect action than today's rods. I then went to making poppers and divers based on the design of antique lures. I never actually used them. It was a hobby at the time.
I had to dig up these. I made several apples for the kids teachers over the years. This was some burl if I recall. This pear was from driftwood. The wood soaked up some minerals and revealed some nice streaking.
Here's my latest. Not quite finished but finished for the evening. They are going to be candle stick holders. The wood is spalted beech.
Why don't you make some Christmas trees on the lathe? With using spalted wood, it really looks good and features the spalting like you wouldn't believe! Now, that's your assignment and you get to keep the results, but you do have to "turn them in" for grading!
First try at a bowl. Got in a hurry and the gouge kept grabbing. Never did get a good surface on the outside. The inside would have been excetible. It's red maple.
They are looking good. Keep at it. I like the spalting on them. Here is a small side table I made last year. I turned the top out of hard maple and dished it a little. This only weighs about 2 lbs.
here are a few of my turning projects , the last two are just a test when i was trying to learn how to use the captive ring tool. please excuse one sideways picture and one i could not seem to enlarge.
Very nice. Thanks for sharing. I'm hoping one day I'll be able to make some furniture. Need more tools first.
Warned ya about looking inside your firewood! These look great - I love me some soft maple. The Wood Wolverine and unclefess - just stunning! Great work! [EDIT] fishingpol too! So much great stuff in this thread!
Nice. My son started doing pens when he was in the Air Force at their rec. center. When he came home he bought a mini lathe and still does it from time to time. I might look into it, could be a cool hobby.
