I have a fairly new county line 25 ton splitter, purchased early January. Today I moved the splitter and it wasn’t on a level surface and hydraulic oil would squirt out every once in a while. The filler cap side was slightly lower than than the other side if that makes sense.

Is this something I should be concerned with?

    thanks

Make sure it's not over filled. Other than that, no. It's best to have the splitter level when possible. Hydraulic oil expands when heated, which happens when you use the splitter. That's why you don't fill the tank above the fill line or over its rated capacity. It also enters the tank fairly rapidly when using extending and contacting the cylinder so some turbulence occurs. The filler cap is also the breather for the tank that is necessary because the oil level changes constantly in the tank as the cylinder moves.

Check the level of the hydro oil and add as needed. Mine has done that to me once. I guess they need to be level.

no, everything is fine. When the cylinder retracts all the way in the fluid level rises to its highest level. When tilted lower they will spray.

Keep the fill cap to the high side if your not completely level. More level is gooder.

Thanks for the replies. It is due for a filter change so I’ll check everything out. Never done a filter change though so hopefully it goes well

:BrianK:The fill cap has a very small vent hole in it so if it's off level some a bit may squirt out. If it happens check you hydro level and try repositioning the splitter a bit. Maybe use a felling wedge under a tire.

Nothing to be concerned with. If the full side is lower it can come out. Using it in the summer can also make it squirt more, as the fluid expands more. I leave a later of sawdust and chips under the splitter to adsorb the oil that comes out.

Over filled if still coming out when close to level. Nothing to worry about

If you are just changing the filter, pick the splitter tongue up and stand it so it's sitting on the butt end of the beam...that should allow you to swap the filter without losing too much oil...I'd still have everything ready to go and try to be ready to be quick about it if the oil level is still high enough to want to run out...have a pan under it, but really shouldn't lose much at all...

If you're just changing the filter, probably won't need to add any more hydraulic fluid

Make sure you get the right filter. My TSC tried to sell me the wrong one. Check the speeco website for your correct one. I'll get you more info when I get to the putr.

This is how I had my Speeco when I changed the filter. Didn't lose any oil.

My TSC splitter has the filter that has a integrated bypass on it.

Good tip. I can't remember. Is the filter interval 50 of 100 hours?

I don't know. I have changed the filter once in 20 years. I guess it is about time I do it again.

Practically none. I may have had a small pan under it when I first removed the filter. I may have lost the oil that was in the filter.

The filter does not need to be replaced anywhere near as often as you think. A splitter does not produce contamination like you would find in a engine. Cut open the filter and look in the pleats and you will find next to nothing. As long as the oil has no water in it your good for several years.
