Hardwood logs (mostly maple) felled in Feb/Mar 2018. Split and stacked to dry in January 2019. Now the end of May 2019 and our wood is perfect for firewood. Note how much the wood shrinks during the 4-5 months it air dried during the winter and spring. Nearly 3" reduction. This here is 16 cu ft, which is equivalent to 1/2 a face cord, which is the same as 1/6 a full cord.
Crate measurement inside is 48x48 inches. Sticks are 16" long.

Great Post... One more reason to get everything split ASAP if you can. Especially if you need it for this coming winter. I would love to know what the moisture content was when first split vs. now..:)

It was 24-28% when I split it. Its now between 9 and 17%.

Its amazing how cold dry air seasons the wood. One thing i dont miss about the cold dry weather is how it wreaks havoc on my hands. I think you folks up there get more of it too.

I've noticed the shrinkage in my woodshed for years now between seasons. I pile about seven feet high and will lose several inches at the top of the pile between the fall and the next summer.

Depends on humidity in the air, much like any other time of year.

I’ve heard if you soak it in Cider you’ll get less checking on the ends. Just sayin.
