image.jpg Been trying to id what kind of wood this is. Tree fell on land I deer hunt and the property owner called me to cut it up. Been reading the forum for about a month now and finally signed up. Looking forward to meeting everyone.

Welcome aboard Tony!! Glad to have you with us at the FHC! Looks to me like a piece of black cherry.......does the wood have a vinegar-ish scent to it?

Yes it does have a slight odor of vinegar. Had a buddy say maple but didn't look like any maple I've seen.

Three for Cherry, a "triple cherry", you've won the jackpot!

I really did hit the jackpot with this and the wood. Land owner lifted the logs up onto 6X6 's to cut. He also removed the brush that was there! Only downside is the poison oak I now have on both legs and forearms. Haha

Cherry, mother nature puts down a chit load on our property so I'm always cutting it, hopefully milling some this year.

This was my first trip to go get wood from the woods. Usually a family member is having trees removed and the people who cut down the trees tell me what it is before I take any of it. How does it burn? I have only burned cherry a few times. To buy it here is $80-$100 for half a face cord. Way to much for me!!

I bought some of this at a local pharmacy, I thought that I rubbed up against some P.I. so I used it once, I guess it was a false alarm.

Cherry burns nice, it does tend to "coal up" a little quicker than other woods but it's still a great wood. One of my favorite smells on the planet is being out in the snow in the wintertime and catching a whiff of a cherry fire........

I save a good bit of the cherry I get for cooking on the firepit.....

I always wear long pants tucked inside my boots, then I tighten them up, this helps keep the ticks from climbing up inside your pant leg.

Will have to save some for cooking also. Sounds pretty good with some slabs of baby backs right about now.

Cherry wood and pork go together like a hand in a glove.........great score, by the way!

As for poison ivy, never was affected by it until just a few years back when we did a huge standing dead oak removal.....There were 4 HUGE 2" thick diameter vines wrapped around the tree. My cutting partner paid DEARLY for that job, he had that stuff all over his happy place for several weeks because he wore shorts to the job that day......He bud the job, he got to climb it!

Yes a good score for me. Probably 3 more loads still to get. After the leg clears up and I can wear pants again. Also a big oak and a maple down. Need to get it done before bow season starts October 1!

Welcome to FHC! Nice find! Awesome that he cleared the brush for you - that's my least favorite part.

I have tons of poison ivy back in the woods, and I get into it almost every time I go on a hauling mission. The trick is to get the oils off of your skin ASAP. Dawn dish soap does a pretty good job of it for me. I keep a bottle right in the shower this time of year. If I scrub down really good and thorough after I know I've been into it I can avoid getting the rash. I don't think I'm as highly allergic to it as some are though.

Poison ivy doesn't bother me either, just not allergic to it.
