Can you please help id this wood? The farmer around the corner is having a bunch of trees near his drainage banks removed via dozer and I'm lucky enough to get first dibs. At first i was thinking some kind of maple but its not splitting like other maples ive split.
I like elm because I get the best secondary burn with it. But it is a pain to process. I don't get a lot luckily so its pleasant when I do
My vote is for Elm also. By the split especially the raggedness on the right side. I have 2 cords split up of dead standing. Next time I fill the indoor wood bin, I will bring in a cart load or 2 to see how it burns. I got some green elm 2 years ago, burning now, seems pretty good. The stringyness makes for built in kindling.
Thanks for the wood id. Elm isnt my 1st choice for choice for firewood since i do all splitting by hand. However im hoping by cutting it up and getting it out of the dozer guys way he'll set the better stuff like oak and ash aside for me to clean up.
It splits easier if you cut it leave it for a couple months then split. also try to split with the rings, not across them.
Work your way in from the outside of the round taking splits as you work around it. Don't think splitting the round in half right away is the way to do it or frustration may be a understatement
