Just found a bunch of these rounds bucked up at the local dump when I went to throw out some rotted pieces. It seems very hard and dense and smells like a bitter orange. It doesn't look like orange osage. I am in NY just north of NYC.
Really? Wow I had a neighbor cut down a cherry tree and it looked nothing like this. It was a dark shade of brown and uniform color throughout. Awesome thanks folks!
I made out like a bandit. A random neighbor walked by and said "Hey you should go to XXXX right around the corner - they cut down a big tree!" Went and checked it out and it was a huge black locust that fell down....and it turns out I know the tree company that did the work so I texted the big boss and his response was "Please take the black locust". Short and to the point! Took 10 trips in my truck literally 30 seconds from my house. Gave half to another neighbor who helped me clear out the pile. Then when I took the rotted/throw away pieces from that pile to the organic dump I just couldn't help myself. The bright yellow pieces were spruce. Someone noodled the rounds in half for me and cut them short.....perfect for kindling! Some nice pine rounds as well. Will cut these up into kindling too. That particular pine round weighed in at 89lbs. This was just the black locust.......... And this is after multiple trips to the dump.
I should have taken a picture of the other side of the dump. That's where they dumped all the branches with leaves.....the cherry was buried at the bottom.....I'm pretty sure there were probably quite a few pieces still hidden underneath the brush. That said, I think I have enough to fill the 2 stacks that are only 1/4 full and a new stack I started out in the back.
