I have the opportunity to scrounge this blowover, less than a mile away. The picture this app calls out sweet/black birch. I've never heard if sweet birch. If it's just another name for black birch, then I think I'm all over it It's been down a few weeks. The Calkins made me guess it was a type of birch.

I began cutting, noodling, splitting the wood to size. 1st of two loads. One of the nicer locations that I've cut at. What's left. The trunk is on a steep bank. I'm glad I'm not needing to move the pieces that slope. 2 loads in my temp storage area. I'm guessing 1/2 cord plus. That black birch sure smells nice cutting it up. The top of the driveway now smells of wintergreen. Hoping to get back tomorrow morning.

Way to get it done Mike. If you're grabbing that bank log try using your hookeroon on it. Stab the trunk on the low side and try to slide it down a bit. I've done this before to avoid bucking on steep banks like that. Kinda skidding it a few feet down hill.
Didn't work. The trunk was just too heavy. Probably the heaviest its been being full of sap. This'll get 3yr sleep for sure What did work was rocking it side to side with the Peavy. It slid a little bit with each move.
I went back for load 3. Just a couple of rounds left. They can stay there for a few days. I'm spent. There're pretty full of center rot. You can see the little schrooms growing on the bark. Storage area getting full. I need to confirm which empty rack I'll start filling. It's good to have inventory again! The 435 did most of the thinner cutting with its 16in nose. The trunk and noodling was done with the 350/18in. Both saws and operator met expectations. Although, my arm looks pretty road-rash-ish. It took a hit trying to keep the trunk from being a full-on runaway down the hill. Ah well, 'tis only a flesh wound. Time for a shower and alieve.
Way to get it done Mike! Good amount of wood there! Wounds are a common casualty of hoarding. Glad it was only minor.
That’s a lot of nice birch, and I’m impressed that you moved it all by car! I can definitely relate to the little by little factor. It all adds up in the end. Yep, definitely much better to have your vehicle downhill from a score rather than fighting against gravity.
