This is part of a tree that had been dead and down for some time. I am thinking it is a Shagbark hickory just by the bark but I am not all that sure. Please help me ID this tree.

If it's Shagbark, that bark will be as hard as ceramic and pop like crazy in the fire.

I don't see a wide light-colored sapwood, that is characteristic of all Shagbark I have seen. Lots of dead trees have shaggy bark, so that is hard to use for ID. I think the wood looks more like Elm than Hickory. There are a lot of dead Elms around and the bark becomes shaggy when they die. Do you have more pictures? A picture of the end of a round?
