Got a mixed load of hardwood today and found this mixed in. It's very dense, orange color, has a heavy bark and tight grow 20200604_143040.jpg 20200604_143032.jpg th rings. The guy that brought it said Butternut? What do you think?

I know soil conditions and climate can vary wood in different areas but I would go with mulberry or it looks like locust also in my area.

Mulberry. Looks exactly our Mulberry here in Iowa. Great wood for smoking, too.

Agree, the bark is too coarse for the Mulberry I've seen around here. Either way good stuff!

Well, I thought you were just kidding around and knew what it was. Hedge! Even better than mulberry.

Yes it is a naturalized species in southern Michigan (which Lake Orion is a part of). It doesn't spread like it does down south though. The firewood dude probably mistook the fruit for walnuts.

But just wait until those fruits grow! For sure they won't look like walnuts then; or maybe walnuts on steroids.

Nice Tim. How much wood did you get? Is it really a Duke's mixture of mainly one type of hardwood?

Nice to see all the replys. I was sold on the mulberry until the other posts came in. Yes it is osage (hedge). It was mixed in with a trailer load and obviously the guy that brought it had no clue. I am told that the native Indians made bows from osage.

How much did you end up getting in the load? Was it just one log?
