I made some progress today - a good feeling.
Constructed the rack shown in the pic today. It’s complete except for some metal roofing on the far side - I’ll get that from neighbor later in the week. The rack will hold two rows of splits and just over a full cord of wood when full. I plan to burn the wood what will be stored in the rack 3-4 winters from now.

The splits you see in the rack I also split today with one of my Christmas gifts - a Fiskars Iso-Core maul. A long time owner of a X27 I have been eager to try an Iso-core - man that thing goes through wood like butter - ok, this was straight grained Ash but... Wow! Often just the weight of the thing falling made a split.

The splits and all the cookies except one are Ash - the other cookie is Black Locust.

Now I’m inside the 72 degrees living room, heat is Silver Maple being digested by the stove.

    Happy new year to everyone

I was also impressed by the Isocore. My x25 does pretty good splitting quarters, or straight stuff 12” and under, but for busting rounds there’s really no comparison. The bigger flare and weight of the isocore becomes evident. As you said the weight alone often is enough. When you swing it with full power rounds that you’d think would need a wedge can be popped open.

I like those racks. Simple and effective. I got an Isocore in October and it is a nice addition to my X27. Usually use it to half rounds then the X27 finishes them off. Ill use it on tougher wood like hickory.
