Hey guys and gals, does anyone have any info on this stove? The guy is in the next town over and wants 500$ for it. I think it's an antique, and probably kicks butt, but I'm not sure what it's worth.

Franklin style stove. The doors are not tight. Wood will burn up real quick. I'm no expert on the availability of adapters for the chimney but I have to think it will be difficult to find an adapter in that shape.

Thanks, yeah I'm sure it's not the most efficient stove around, I was thinking about using it in the garage, so it wouldn't have to be really great considering there's no insulation anyway.. Lol. I better see if I could get an adapter first before it becomes another hunk of metal in the garage

My grandparents had one very similar to that when I was kid- my dad always said it was a POS! But it kept their back porch (barely a 4 season room) plenty comfy.... $500 bucks? Meh..... A barrel stove for the shop is a cheaper, better heating appliance.

Spend your money on a newer stove from TSC or HD when they go on sale.
Cool looking, but I've done my time with a stove that needed to be refilled several times a day. I wouldn't waste my time, but that's me.

That's a HUGE exhaust portal. I'm just wondering how the stove would function if that got necked down to a 6" or even an 8" opening.
Makes me think of this movie............:D

Personally I'm with Papa Dave, find something more efficient for your buck.....if you are going to purchase, top end in my opinion would be $250 because after you feed that hungry thing for a season you'll be ready to pitch down the hollar

I'd pass on that one as it's a 19th century stove that isn't airtight and probably has cracks somewhere. My grandfather had one of similar design that was basically akin to burning an open fireplace--- right down to the smoke smell throughout the house.
$500 can get you a new "lower end" stove from HD, but it can also get you a kick-A used stove on craigslist that would be perfect for a garage or barn. With a little elbow grease, you can fix up an older EPA stove and save yourself some serious $$ from buying new.

Yep, I found a nice used WS Fireview recently (that someone on here snatched up) for $500.
    They're out there.
I can find old stoves for 200-500 all day on CL, but not too many worth spending money on.

If you want to spend 500 bucks keep looking, I paid 450 for my 3 year old Lopi, sold my old smoke dragon for $175

We had a similar stove way back when. The doors made difficult to control air flow, especially on windy nights! We found a different stove the next year.....

After starting to read this thread Davies suggestion is where I was leaning. For $500 you may be getting an antique that may look good but not perform so well. If it's in the garage and looks are not all that important, you could spend the same money on a new stove that's EPA rated and will outperform the smoke dragon.

There is a difference between old and antique. Methinks that stove is old and would never be worth that much even if you kept it another 30 years. They were perhaps the most inefficient stove out there. You would get very little heat and perhaps a lot of smoke you don't want. In a garage I doubt it would raise the temperature more than perhaps 20 degrees in winter; maybe not that much.

when I was looking I saw a couple of Lopi answers for 200 and 250, would easily heat a garage, they were too small for what I needed.
Saw some other brands of small good Stoves for around that price too

Might be worth the money if that stove was the last one you needed to finish off your antique stove collection, but not to heat your garage. GLO AT, keep your options open. Still have plenty of time to find a good deal before the cold comes.
