Picked up four gallons of bar oil yesterday on sale at TSC and noticed it was Winter weight. First time I recall getting it. At what temperature should I switch?

Too thin for my liking in summer.
You want to swap a couple out for a couple standard weight I have here on the shelf let me know.

When you turn the jug over of standard weight and it doesn't run out it is time.

It runs just fine in most "warmer" weather too. I don't think there's really an upper limit where it wouldn't be good to go. I wonder what the actual viscosity difference is once the oil makes it up to typical operating temps. Bars get pretty warm in operation!

I wonder if it would be usable in the summer on those saws that don't have an adjustable oiler? Maybe get a little more oil on the bar then?

As for temp, I've never used any so I'm no help there. I'd just set a number, say 32°f, and adjust as i see how it's working out. Say full tank of oil to full tank of fuel. I'd bet every brand is slightly different. More personal preference than anything.

I switch when I gotta put on long John's.

What were they charging for it? Seems like it draws a premium here.

TSC had empty shelves that had it for 8.99 on sale. (im assuming normal all season weight) I asked a guy Saturday when I was in there and he said there's a case probably in the truck waiting to be unloaded. When I went back yesterday there was four on another shelf that rang up for over $80! I spotted the winter weight label and said uh oh to myself. I told the cashier and a couple of others checked and got it for the stated sale. Only time I recall seeing Winter weight in a TSC.

I'm always on the hunt for a good oil deal, moreso for the thin stuff. So far I've not paid over $12/gallon but have not bought any for a year or more. I survived off of some old Jonsered branded winter stuff that looked like ATF a few years back. I think I got it when Jred exited TSC and it was on clearance. Bought 6 gallons at the time. The rest I have accumulated are Makita, Husky and one of the off brands in an orange bottle. Using Husky right now.

    Kinda spendy but on sale

Might have to go get a couple. Rural King.

I use it year round unless I can find summer oil cheaper. As far as cold goes when snow is on the wood and you don’t rev sling the moisture off the bar at the end of a cut it will freeze the chain to bar before the next cut. At zero or colder it’s almost instantly after the chain stops rolling. When I forget to sling, I drag the chain on the round to free it. With 2 or more layers on its time to use winter oil the bars and chains are to expensive to not get the most life out of you can.

If referring to the flash freeze of the bar/chain. Could it be that it’s just flashing down that fast. You must have thrown a cup of coffee in the air at colder than -30 and see that it vaporizes before it touches the snow. Is this the same magic?

Never wasted coffee; but have been outside take a leak and it froze before hitting ground.. sounds weird BUT usually pretty focused on getting “equip” back umm under cover

Thanks for knowledge as here cutting below zero is just to solve emergency situations.

My local TSC’s always have a few gallons of the winter stuff on the shelf. I’d use it up now. Just watch it, it’ll pour out quick.
