Bad news for winter weather fans( I would hope that you all are)... WARM AND DRY At least for Wisconsin. This is crushing for a winter sport lover such as myself.
We haven't had a good winter for quite a few years now and I don't expect it to change anytime soon. Although, I'd take warm and dry over warm and wet. Nothing like raining in January and then freezing.
Farmers Almanac states that it will be really cold and snowy???????????? (But they seem to be always wrong). In my 44 years of life on the same farm; my observation has always been (2) things. The first is that we tend to have winters in pairs. Over the last two years we have had really snow filled winters, so we are due for a change. The other observation has been with water bodies. If a water body (pond) is low on water at the start of the winter, it will be full by the end of the winter (a lot of snow), but if the pond is full starting winter, mother nature will not try to fill it. So in other words, if it is a dry fall, we will have lots of snow, but if its a wet fall, the snow won't be deep. The ponds are full after a VERY deep drought this summer, so it stands to reason we won't get a lot of snow.
Well the good news is it's a weather forecast & they usually don't even make 50/50 in my experience, so there's still hope!
Weather forecasters seldom stick their heads outside the window they believe what the compuker tells them IF ITS ON THE INTERNET IT MUST BE TRUE?????
Well, oddly enough, our local station just put out their Winter forecast. The Chief met is a real weather geek & I have a good amount of respect for him. He thinks due to numerous factors we'll likely have a bit colder & snowier Winter than avg. That includes the Northeast as well. Not sure on Suburban wood snob's location. We'll see. Check back in March & we'll know.
Computer analyses has pretty much replaced wild arse guessing. As a tool it tends to confirm as much that is known which is the same limitation with computer analysis. The weather guys are usually more right than wrong. It's just hilarious when expectations aren't met. Hey, they're not the only ones to mutter: "That wasn't supposed to happen".
Eh, slightly warmer and slightly less to near normal precipitation could mean 1 degree above normal, and .5" less snow doesn't mean much as long as it's not too warm. We'll see.
Lemme guess? You have sleds rotting away like me Used to be the center of my life. No longer. Unfortunately. Hello Florida for a few days. May as well sneak away to get in some fishing Therapy I say!
That's congruent with what I observed my last couple decades in New England. The only thing I'd add is the dry/snowless winters are often colder, and then there's a heavy dump or two anywhere between mid Feb. and early April.
It was autumn, and the Indians on the remote reservation asked their new Chief if the winter was going to be cold or mild. Since he was an Indian Chief in a modern society, he had never been taught the old secrets. When he looked at the sky, he couldn't tell what the weather was going to be. Nevertheless, to be on the safe side, he replied to his tribe that the winter was indeed going to be cold and that the members of the village should collect firewood to be prepared. Also, being a practical leader, after several days he got an idea. He went to the phone booth, called the National Weather Service and asked, "Is the coming winter going to be cold?" "It looks like this winter is going to be quite cold indeed," the meteorologist at the weather service responded. So the Chief went back to his people and told them to collect even more wood in order to be prepared. A week later, he called the National Weather Service again. "Is it going to be a very cold winter?" "Yes," the man at National Weather Service again replied, "it's definitely going to be a very cold winter." The Chief again went back to his people and ordered them to collect every scrap of wood they could find. Two weeks later, he called the National Weather Service again. "Are you absolutely sure that the winter is going to be very cold?" "Absolutely," the man replied. "It's going to be one of the coldest winters ever." "How can you be so sure?" the Chief asked. The weatherman replied, "The Indians are collecting wood like crazy."
Don't worry! What ever weather we get the Weather Channel will be making reports just like this one...
