State cutting, left to fertilize the forest floor. Half a load of black cherry and half of white ash. Some of the most solid ash I’ve gotten in a longggg time. Score!
WOW!!! That is solid, even with bark still on. Id wouldve beeen all over that too like flies on,...well you get the idea. Where was this as i see snow on the ground? We only had rain here from last nights storm.
The ash was definitely fresh. I’ll bet the tree was still alive when they cut it, although it was definitely dying. Many epicormic sprouts around the trunk. It had that nice unmistakable smell fresh ash has when you cut it, which I’m going to miss. This score was in Harwinton, on a quiet road off of state highway route 222. I passed multiple cuttings on the way there but a lot of it was red maple and white pine. Once I saw the ash and cherry in one spot I HAD to stop though I had about 2” of wet snow overnight last night. Up at the top of the mountain a few hundred feet above me had about 4”. The further west I got, the more there was. I stopped in Canton to visit a friend and they had nothing way up there.
Was this an unexpected score and you happened to have the saw with you? Just did a quick CT geography lesson and see its not far from you.
I was out for a drive with my older son, just to get out of the house for a bit when I stumbled on this score. Luckily had the saw in the truck with extra fuel, bar oil, chain etc. If I didn’t have a saw with me I would’ve flip flopped whatever I could to get it in the truck
That's great that the state lets you take it (or you can get away with it) . You would be depriving nature of its God given resources around here and fined to the max allowable. Some Karen would be on 911 the minute you tapped your brakes around here.
Nice haul Eric! Amazing to see ash in that condition. I’ve only seen half rotten/standing dead over the last few years unfortunately.
Was wondering why you didn't split those juicy rounds in half or quarters in order to load. Decided to check your profile for age. That explains it; you are a youngster and have no need to haul a maul around.
I had the maul in the truck with me but was being stubborn. If I was going to pack that truck heavy, I probably would have halved or quartered them to save space.
I happened to be driving by today and decided to get a few scraps. The 4 foot log I’m saving for milling, since it’s so fresh. The rest will be processed and added to the stacks. There’s more there but smaller diameter and too far down the bank for my liking.
Just like last time, I ended up with a little cherry mixed in. Came across some pin cherry and black cherry from 2 separate spots later on in our adventure.
I already had a small pallet pen almost full of ash and cherry, so this should top it off perfectly. I split all the cherry skinnies so they’d dry faster. This is my first score of pin cherry and it proved to split harder than black cherry. I’ll probably burn it in the spring 2024 shoulder season, using the small pieces as filler wood. The ash I’ll probably dry for 2 years though. I’m in no hurry to make the rapidly disappearing ash disappear any faster.
