from one of our friends who lives a few miles north. She said a conservation officer told them that there have been sightings of a large wolf pack roaming the northern part of our county (he said there were 20 of 'em). Maybe they'll clear out some of the coyotes.
I was walking the creek bed at my parents property last weekend and heard a noise about 50 yards in front of me that I've never heard before in the 30+ years I've been walking those woods. I don't know what it was...but it was killing a heron. I'm not one of "those guys"...but it sounded a LOT like a big cat. If someone told me it was a mountain lion I would be like "yup...that sounds about right". I turned around and left as fast as I could. I've never been scared in the woods before that...
Be careful Dave- they may be lookin for a new ride.... Cruising the streets, doin' them Wolf Whistles at the farwood hoarders and such.....
Been there done that myself. A cougar is nothing to mess with. In my case it was at night, you couldn't see a thing, but you could hear it coming, and it was getting closer as the seconds ticked. It was not backing down. I got all 3 dogs and my now wife inside the cabin before it was able to get to us.
We had hybrids move in last year. They have absolutely collapsed the prey animal population around here. I've had one middle of the night run-in with one at close range that resulted in him coming out of the altercation worse than me. That being said, I would NOT want to be caught from behind or unarmed with what they've done to some of the farmers around here. A month or so ago, I was about to go out the garage door to check on the barn in the middle of the night and, as I touched the doorknob, the hair on the back of my neck started to stand up. I decided I could just look out the upstairs window instead of going outside. When I pulled the blinds up, there was a big stag backed up against the door I had almost gone out and, just beyond the edge of the security light, there was a ring of glowing eyes watching the stag.
So the plot thickens on this. I was telling my BIL about this and he said that one of his coworkers lives about 2 miles from where I was. He caught something unusual on a game cam and called the DNR. They came out and confirmed it was a mountain lion....found tracks and everything. Yikes.
I'm not afraid of the dark, just afraid of what I can't see in the dark! Couple of years ago a buddy that works at the Sheriffs Dept. said he saw a BIG cat run across the road a mile from my work around 2:00 in the morning on his way home from work. We were asking him what he had been drinking and boy did he get pizzed!! Now a couple of weeks ago supposedly there was another sighting just 3 miles from my work. Gary
My buddy used to be a big bow hunter (he was a host on one of those cable TV hunting shows a few times) He tells a story of being out Northwest in the mountains somewheres, miles from anything, heck miles from anything that even an ATV would be able to traverse. He was sitting against a tree (by himself) when the hair on the back of his neck just stood up, about then he heard a snort and felt hot breath. Turning around he realized that a mama Grizz has snuck up on him and was on the other side of the tree he was sitting against, I don't recall the details of how he got outta there (I'm not sure he even completely recalls all of the details of those moments) but he did make it out alive and unscathed... it still gives me chills even typing out the story. He said even though there was others on this hunting trip, none of them were anywhere close by, and may have never even been able to find traces of him had the bear had lunch.
I think that qualifies as scare worthy. Until last week I thought the worst thing I may come across in the woods is a yote. ..and they don't bother me. I was in Yellowstone one year and a bunch or idiots were out taking pictures of a grizzly cub from 20 ft. I thought I was going to see a mauling firsthand because you know momma isn't far away...and probably super pizzed.
So the DNR are finally agreeing there are wolves in the LP. Cougars too. I still recall 30-40 years ago when they still swore no cougars anywhere in MI. Only big cats, but no cougars. Right... Then they finally did some dna testing and say most or all cougars in MI came from SD. I know they move a long ways but never dreamed they would move that far. Wolves, they did admit a couple years ago there were some near Onaway. That's not that far from you Dave.
moral of most of these stories seem the same.. the government agency in charge of knowing about them seems to be the last to know...
25-30 minutes. We used to go up there for dinner at a nice restaurant called Wood Winds. Haven't been there in a while. That's well within range of us.
The coyotes won't be the only thing they clear out. Overheard in a conversation between two yoopers a few years back.... "You have any wolves out by your camp?" "Not as many as there used to be."
