I am spending today cleaning this pos and I really should be throwing up instead! Running a 102 fever and I gotta fix this idiot thing! It turns on runs a cycle then clicks off and doesn't come on again. We need it when we are gone during the day for about 2 or 3 hours after the stove can't keep up. I have changed the thermostat and air filter thinking that was it but no then I called my father and he had me clean the probe nothing. I have checked all the connections and even vacuumed the idiot thing out and nothing. I have a HVAC guy coming out Friday and that was the best I could get after calling around. Any ideas on what to do next?
What type of furnace? I designed and installed HVAC systems for years before changing professions but i still install and service a bunch of them each year. Is it natural gas and if so is it a 90+. What brand is it and when there is a call for heat what does it do? Does it try to light and go out does it even try to light? If it has a control board it will have diagnostics on usually a flashing led. I went and worked on my sisters for her a week ago and it basically did the same thing. It would light and run but after the first cycle when it would call for heat the over temp sensor above the heat exchanger would still be tripped so it would fault out when it tried to start and then lock itself out so I had to add a 60 second delay after the call for heat to make sure the blower stayed on long enough to cool the heat exchanger.
Reminds me of the guy parachuting and his chute doesn't open, as he is plummeting down he passes a guy coming up at the same speed. He hollers at the guy "Hey Buddy do you know anything about parachuting"? The guy replies "No, do you know anything about gas furnaces"? Gary
By probe I assume you have a gas furnace and you cleaned the flame sensor? Certified106 is on it about checking the diagnotics. Does it have a flue exhaust motor?
Sorry fellas I have been out of it... Ya I tore it all down and cleaned everything completely! It runs ok at least it runs lol. I have a furnace tech coming out to look it over on Friday so I don't have to mess with it anymore. My apologies I also stopped getting notifications for this thread.
I hadn't got any more notifications for this one either.....lol Let us know if you need any more help. Glad it's working for you now.
Im trying to talk my son into taking HVAC at the Vo-Ed school next year cause of situations like that. Hes leaning towards Construction Trades. Either way Ill be happy.
Ours at the shop was doing that, I think this is the correct term for what they fixed, the thermocouple was shot. Whatever heats up to light the flame was shot. It was like this one in the link, ours was cracked about 1.5 from the tip. http://www.zorotools.com/g/00104692...kw={keyword}&gclid=CMDUxIzflLwCFY1AMgod72QA6g
Thanks zap I haven't got the time to do anymore this week so I'll let the furnace guy have a shot at it. Honestly the furnace needs to be replaced but with wood we can't justify the expense. I'm saving for a pellet furnace as backup for the replacement I'm done with gas anything!
If he is at all interested in HVAC I would tell him to go that way with it. The work is a lot more steady and there is almost always a demand for a good HVAC technician.
Any trade that requires a license is the way to go. I apprenticed for a year under a master oil burner tech when I was in school -- Unfortunately he had a stroke and had to close up shop. And I went into construction; if I had it to do over again I would have gotten my masters license.
What did it turn out to be, Pete? I am placing my wager on thermocouple or gas valve if its an old furnance, or some redundant circuit board if its newer. Mine has blown a circuit board a few times, always at the beginning of the season.
http://www.lamppakuuma.com/kuuma-vapor-fire-100-high-efficiency-wood-gasification-furnace.html These furnaces I believe, are the leading edge in forced air wood burning technology. The Kuuma -vapor- 200 which is the smallest of the two units, represents the easiest add wood furnace installation that I have seen. But the 200 unit which is the smaller of the two, requires a minimum heat load of 10,000 BTUs per hour to gasify.
For the ultimate Pellet furnace... http://www.psg-distribution.com/product.aspx?CategoId=28&Id=542 120,000 BTU's, 6 speed blower (air temp always stays constant, the speed of air is all that changes, 240 lb hope for extended run times 2-5 days (depending on size of house and heat demand/would be around 3 days for me), and can add an electronic element for when pellets tun out, along with Central Air hook up. This is one of the 1st all in one furnaces. Unlike all other models that are listed as Secondary units (can NOT have solid fuel as Primary), because of the electric heating elements that are used when pellets run out (removed human error) , this unit can be used as Primary furnace-A/C for a home. If and when my Fahrenheit bites the dust? This will be what I buy. It will replace my EVERYTHING. I can sell my Trane LP furnace and A/C condensor and my Fahrenheit. I will likely keep the Enerzone upstairs, just for shoulder season. It's a bad Mama Jama
It is old basically he bandaged it enough to limp it along for a while. I forget what it was now. I just want it to die and force my hand lol. Its like the car you wish somebody would total by dropping a dumpster on it....
I don't have that option, furnace is rather new. If I had more storage for firewood I would be looking at going to wood for hot water, but not something that is in the cards while I live here. Hoping to relocate to the country near a more populated area once the kids are out of school. If the right situation presented itself, I would jump on a farm in this area too.
