    Hi there

I was walking along a dirt track behind my house looking for firewood about 1 km away from my house I found a tree lying on the ground! It was about 7 meters long, a nice size to drag home. About half way my arms and legs started to become sore and tired. Somehow I made it back home. At home I started to cut some logs but all the logs were coved in small branches sticking out of them so I got my axe out and tried to cut them of but they would not come off! So... it looks like time for the hammer I said to my self with a grin on my face. WHACK SMACK after about 10 min of non stop smacking I got all the small branches off.

Knots are no mach for the pure power of the hammer! How much do you dislike them?

    Kind Regards

    Arlo

I know quite a few of my stacks that got a few uglies of crotches, rounds that would split in ugly ways, etc, because of knots.

I love knots. I like to split em right in half. :axe:I get better shaped splits that way, and I just like the workout.

If it's elm or oak sometimes it's just the way the grain goes. Maple however is usually pretty straight grained and very easy to split.

I split my wood all by hand but if I get one that's really stubborn I set it aside and when the pile gets big enough I borrow my neighbors splitter, makes quick work of it.

Badly knotted wood I use a chainsaw to split. The rest I use an 8# maul. Knot wood is good because it is denser and so it has more heat :smoke:

Knots come in very handy when working with ropes.

Some of my sugar maple has been the most difficult to split of all. I've had some that has been almost impossible. Ironwood can be very stringy and a pain, but often is small enough (8-9 inches) to not require splitting, and often has been standing dead long enough to not require much drying time. ( A dry Ironwood round burns beautifully and slowly. ) And I hate splitting a tree that has grown in a spiral fashion, bark pattern swirling around the tree. Knots, at least, I can split around.

Most of the time knots are cool like in a house if you have wooden walls or floor it looks nice. Sometimes its a pain in the backside. Well maybe that log that I was trying to split was just a bit to knotty.

Have a nice day guys! :D
