Whiskey! I cut into a log on a tract where they clearcut in July. Soon as I finished, it smelled just like a jigger of fine bourbon!
I guess so, cuz I am obliging, sept it's rum. But I swear, it smelled awesome, surprised me how nice it was, lol. White oak is always pleasant to me but this was great.
I think it smells like dill out where I live. Just asked my old man about it and he agreed. I think it was Scotty Overkill's boy that said it smells like vanilla out in PA.
My personal favorite. Whiskey and/or vanilla. Watch me chop fresh cut rounds and ill be sniffing away on the splits. I cut some chestnut oak (a variety of white oak) for the first time over the weekend and it had more of a vanilla smell.
It was just a limb close to the fallen ash i bucked on Saturday. Maybe 7-8" diameter. Didnt split it yet but in familiar with the ease of hand splitting oak.
Some of the standard white oak around here can be a bit of a bear to hand split, but the chestnut oak usually splits better than the best red oak. Makes you feel strong like bull!
White oak i processed back in March. Guy had tree cut down, i got the wood. 24" DBH tree made some nice splits. Victim of the gypsy moth caterpillar.
Probably smells like whiskey because whiskey is aged in oak barrels. Speaking of which, I have a bottle of makers mark in the den that’s calling my name...
The best is when you have some White Oak rounds sitting for a couple years, "curing." It takes twice as long to split it because you have to sniff it so often. When I get around to these, they should have a heavenly fragrance. They've been there about 1.5 years. I covered them with some metal roofing today to stop the mushroom growth. Here's what I start my White Oak loads with. Whether you do that, or drink it, you end up with singed eyebrows either way.
