I hauled wood to a few paper mills that would still dock the truck driver for loose piling! :)

Except that there will be more than an actual cord, in that area, because a cord of wood is figuring a certain amount of air. Only 85 cubic feet of 128 cubic feet is wood. That leaves 43 cubic feet of air.

I've got a feeling that us FHC'ers stacks are more than actual cordage.

Just all the more reason to get paid by weight instead of by the cord! :)

I sold some wood to a guy this year who wanted 45 cord. later he was not sure if he got enough and was thinking about 11 more cord.

Since I sold the wood by cord instead of weight, there was an easy 5 cord more total, plus the 80 cord per year he has been buying was no where near 80 cord. We put my 45 cord on top of his former buyers wood and my loads overhung the pile by both the front and the back. That is because we have a lot bigger truck. Ours has a 24 foot body and that guys was 20 foot. On top of that, I cut the wood 28 feet, so it overhung a lot, and 4 feet 8 feet wide and 10 feet high is more then a cord of extra wood. So now the guy is up to an extra 10 cord. But I also cut almost exclusively big beech, and as we all know, beech has high BTU's per cord, so not only did the guy get 10 extra cord, it is going to burn a lot slower too. He got his moneys worth, but will not know it for 2 years when they buy wood from someone else and see what he got for his money's worth.

That all depends. To say that all cords are that much air is pure baloney. That is 1/3 air and 2/3 wood. I know not who and how they came up with that figure but you won't find that is most of the wood stacks on FHC.

I agree, but people that think they are smarter than us think otherwise.

Yes, I've argued this point with many. I fondly remember one time someone was on my place and although I never mentioned how much wood I had, they assumed I knew nothing and they were the pro. I let them carry on and on about how my stacks were really shy simply because I cribbed the ends. Therefore, what I was claiming to be cords were not cords. Man, he was really convincing too...if I didn't know squat.

However, after he finished his foolishness I took out a trusty tape measure and gave it to him. I took the end and went to one end of the stack and then asked him how long the stack was. He started mumbling some garbage then left. Why? The stack we measured was 10' long and he assumed it was 8' long. He did not stay around long enough to know that the stack was also 4 1/2' high. But, such are the so-called pros among us...

And they will always be among us. There are those who "do" and those who just "talk". FHC members are the doers. We hand down the "hands on" to our children and grandchildren.
