Just wanted some opinions on what you guys would get to do this job ive got to do every so often. Im always in the process of clearing and improving my property. Which always involves cutting trees that are in the way or dying Ash trees. Also any firewood that gets cut in the woods... The stumps get cut as low as possible. But the ones in my picture get cut low... Then a buddy comes in and grinds them out... Which is a cool thing to watch ! Ive always struggled and been hard on my 50 cc class saws during this process. They do the job... But it's not ideal. I just got a nice husqvarna 261 from Gary that i plan on using for bigger stuff like this. But always have in mind the perfect stumper ! In my mind... Maybe a Husky 272xp or 372xp. Plastic scratched and faded ... But sound as a pound mechanically ! Something with a 20 or 24 inch bar. So what do u guys think ? Keeping a budget of around $400.... Half ways light....and reliable. My thing... Is if its gonna be a little heavy ... It better zip through a stump double quick . Thank guys. I look forward to seeing your responses Ps... These are the average size trees i cut....
Something older, lots of torque, fairly cheap to obtain...... There's an 045 on CL around here...... Lol, a bit heavy, even for a stump machine. I was thinking an 038 Super would do pretty good as a stumper and be extra tough to kill.....
A 70 cc class saw and 24"/25" bar would be right at home. Or 28" if you come across a big one. Some 60 cc saws could pull the 24"/25", but 70 cc's is another league A fun league! Is the 372xp the only saw you had in mind? Don't discount the 044/440 or 046/460. Some come up pretty cheap.
A rough looking 046/460 would own a 24" bar and be super easy/cheap to build and repair. Lots of donor saws and parts available for those.
This guy's got it right. Tell your wives you've kicked CAD and your not gonna buy anymore saws. Give her a minute of joy..... then tell her you just bought a bulldozer!!!
Im not against a Stihl...or dozer !! LOL ! I just close my eyes and see an older faded Husky with no decals sittin on a stump for some reason ! I wont tell you guys what else is on this crazy mind
Im also torn between what bar to use . I dont wanna have multi bars for it..but one size to keep it simple . Most times a 20 inch works just fine . But there is a ton of multi-trunk trees on my property . Some of which have 4 to 6 full size trees coming out of one stump . So the bottom of the stumps are pretty big and tough to cut . Im almost wondering if a 24 inch bar wouldnt cover everything Ill ever cut better . Plus...I have to have the double bucking spikes...which takes away like 2 inches of useable bar length . Ill consider an old Stihl too..if I can wrap my pin head around one
Also...My GF's 550xp in the pic....is such a pleasure . Its still all stock..and impressive . Still the nicest 50cc Ive used to date !
8-10k mini ex or a medium sized dozer d5 or so shouldn't have too much trouble with the stumps. Should be able to rent from a rental place for $200-300 a day.
