The good news is that the ash I got stacked in February has made some serious progress and will be ready for the fall.

However, I noticed small piles of dust in between the rows. What's eating my wood?

I have noticed the same thing in various places..tiny holes... but when I split that piece I don't see any bugs, so I'm all ears if anyone knows.

Most likely powder post beetles would be my guess. They burn just fine.

How small are the holes? 1/16" to 1/8" holes would most likely be powder post beetles. Bigger holes could be a different borer. "D" shaped holes around 1/4" are EAB. But that's usually on a live tree and they bore into the bark to get at the cambium layer.

Yeah, they are real fond of that Hickory. Hard to tell from the pic how fine the dust is, though...

It's the giant varacious saw tooth beetle:rofl: , LP hit the nail on the head, If the wood is more than a year old they come a runnin! Black/carpenter ant's hit it hard too, that may be something to look at:whistle: I get them fairly frequently…. Sprinkle your wood with moth flakes on a good day. It wont effect the burn or anything this time of year and it will dissipate over time, I do it from time to time to clear them out!

The three pictures below are done from powder post beetles. We never worry about them in the least. Just knock the dust off before bringing into the house.

Good to know. I have a little bit of dust in my stack with the oldest wood.

I wouldn't worry. They are gone by now.
