Apparently mine is old and outdated whatever the *** that means. I'm getting messages. What does it do and what's a good one for a hick living in the woods and likes his privacy? I don't like Google.

I used to like firefox when I had a PC.
Now I use Safari and/or Chrome.

All your data are belong to them, your phone is probably worse as many apps have their metaphorical hands in the cookie jar there as well.

Yes. The browser is the software that renders and displays the web page on your screen. It runs on your computer.

The search engine resides in their computer.

As I type to you, my browser allows me to delete words, type, etc.

Things aren’t as black and white as they were in the early years of the web. At first, it was very transactional; as you filled out a box of text like what I’m typing into now, everything was happening local, on my computer, in the browser. Then, only when I hit post, would data be sent out across the wires to another computer.

Today there is back and forth communication, often as you type. It is how some of the predictive searches work. You type a search phrase in your browser, but as you type your browser is sending the data to their server and their server is updating what is displayed in your browser.

No, they are a search engine, and are one of the “they”.

The computer on the other end of the wire can tell what type of browser you have, every time you send information. It can customize what it sends back. If you use an old browser, the computer on the other end might grumble at you because it wants to do something fancy but you won’t be able to appreciate it and possibly it will display m/act badly within your old browser.

Ok, I would have guessed PC, because Apple usually sees to keeping you current. I don’t have much Mac experience, just iOS (iPad and iPhone). Are you in Safari?

Safari is the browser that comes on Apple devices. But you could have something else installed, too.

I use duckduckgo , chrome and a few others leave out information I'm interested in. Regardless of Mozilla Firefox, chrome, duckduck go, they all bounce off google. Do you have an option to "upgrade" your browser button?

WW, this thing has a bunch of buttons. If I only knew how remember what they do, and knew what they meant, and knew how to use them:D I could go on and on. Never used one (computer) for my work and I'm more of a handle, lever, or pedal guy anyway. The only buttons in my past were on my shirt:D.
