I'm replacing my old fence and looking to see if I can use the old fence is safe to burn. From everything I'm reading, if it's cedar it is safe to burn in my outdoor fireplace and if it is treated pine then it is not. Is there anyway someone could help me identify which type of wood I'm dealing with?

Freshly cut or split, cedar should smell like a cedar chest, and treated wood should have more of a paint/chemical smell to it...

As long as you are only burning it outside try burning a little bit and don’t inhale deeply if you know what I mean but see if it gives off any odors that smell like chemicals or if it gives off black sooty smoke abort mission. If you know it’s cedar chances are its untreated.

Cut or break a piece and let us see a pic. I'm leaning towards treated from the greenish color of the wood.

broken piece is cedar. Not sure of the cut 2x4, but it doesnt look pressure treated. Did you give the broken piece a sniff? Should still have a faint cedar smell IME.

Looks like cedar to me too Thomas. I would burn it personally, but I'm not that fearful.

Depends on how old it is though. Had cedar fencing that split with no smell to it. Result of 15-25 years being a fence takes out the oils. I think its safe to burn, most often if any kind of coating like varnish or stain is on it, tends to be a lighter brown or a faded Corroded copper Green. Think you got fuzzy algae so you’re ok!
