Last year, I got my bar pinched on my CM462, just as the tree rolled on me, and I ended up busting out the bolts in the case. Heli-coils would not work. I have had it in the shop, at my closest Stihl dealership for about 10 months or more.

We finally decided that I would need a new half case to fix it, and the half case has been on order for at least probably 9 maybe 10 months now. I have lost track of time. They say their hands are tied and there is nothing that can be done to speed up getting the new half case, as it has to come from Germany.

I finally decided to call a larger Stihl dealership farther away and was told it would take months to get a new half case in. So, there is nothing to be gained by going there.

My question is, are there any people who would have a new half case in stock in the U.S. that I could source out? Or am I just screwed for the time being? I know, no one even seems to have a new 462 in stock on the shelves in my area.

I guess it's not an emergency, it's just that I miss that saw. I do have other saws to use. I have considered having my dealer remove the half case and letting me take it and weld it up. But I don't know if it's really worth the trouble, it's just that it seems like there is no light at the end of the tunnel, as far as getting a new part in. I can weld Magnesium after I find some fill rod.

Suggestions? Maybe I just need to be more patient, but unfortunately, patience is not something I possess a lot of.
Or maybe I am just infected with CAD and need to buy a new 400, as that is about the only saw, anyone has in stock, right now, close to the same size.

If it's trashed now it has to come apart anyway.
I don't see what you have to loose by trying to weld it.

And don't, whatever you do, forget to tighten the nut for the flywheel!

Cause if you do...you may find yourself pressing the credit card reader buttons at Walmart with your "nub" or your toe may be missing

Yep, I was wondering about ebay. What are those people doing, buying saws and parting them out?

    Whe
It’s probably a part someone ordered and never picked up, or someone wanted a damaged 462 fixed and changed their mind.

I think a lot of the new parts have been written off shops inventory and now are being sold on the side.
Then you have the people who buy everything at a auction of a closed shop.

Guys will buy brand new saws and piece them out too...its one way of getting around stihls rule about dealers not selling parts online.

If you are wanting another 462 try an Ace True Value if you have them down there. They seem to have the best chainsaw inventory. The local one had a 462 & 400 on the shelf when I was in there a couple days ago.

I would definitely try flea bay or welding before buying another saw though.

I know, loose flywheels sound scary and dangerous.

Don’t know of anyone who has one. I don’t remember the extent of the damage, but I do know a couple tig guys that could fix it if the OP can’t. It could end up costing as much as a new case half, but at least TIG rod is available

Contact several trees services in the area to see if they have a broken parts saw. Maybe get on a list of they have one and it dies on them. Tree guys can be pretty tough on equipment. Some will just grab a new saw and keep going.

I dropped a log on my 201 top handle last week and broke some plastic. I havent looked into replacement parts yet as i have another top handle to use. One is a major part and im thinking its pricey.

Oh, the 400 is a sweet saw. Saved for one, found a great deal on a BARELY used one with a bunch of sweet extras and guy backed out. Funds went to a BARELY used 462 instead as i found another deal. Three weeks later the 400 guy changed his mind and sold it to me. The 462 powerhead is only a few ounces heavier than the 400 powerhead.

Nothing wrong with having more than one saw, but you didnt hear that from me!

I going to go talk to my dealer, and if he can't give me a better idea of when I will see the new half case, I think I might just get one off of ebay.
