Okay, I'm no cowboy, real woodsmam or officially trained arborist. I can just about tie my shoes and an occasional Christmas bow without help, but I have no clue about what knot I should use to pull a black locust limb out so I can drop the tree. :emb:

I know I need a weighted throwing line so I can get the rope over the limb, but how do I knot the rope once its over the limb?

I apologize for my ignorance but at least I know enough to ask the right questions....I think!

Thanks! I looked on the net and thought a running bowline may do it but I wasn't sure.

Just make a loop in the end of the rope and then pull the other end through the loop while it is around the tree and then it chokes on the tree.

That's exactly the point of the running bowline except the knot won't bind on itself and is easily untied after the pulling is done. Also minimal loss of line strength compared to other loops that could be used:yes:

Not sure....maybe by hand, maybe my BX. But its a bit spooky getting the U.L.A.V. up there because of the side slope. I may be able to borrow a come-along and pull it.

Rope comealongs aren't but about 50 bucks for a good Maasdam . Handiest thing too !!!!
What is the diameter of that limb ?
    I don't know if I'm looking at something 12" butt diameter ×40' long . Or 4" dia ×15' long.

I highly recommend this book !! It has most all the knots and hitches . And a whole bunch more stuff in it .
WesSpur, Tree Stuff, and several other outfits sell it . It's around 14 bucks.

If I was going to pull it down . I would probably do exactly what Barcroft suggested.

For your task, depending on what kind of rope you're using, I'd recommend making a loop at one end using a knot such as this bowline knot, then use a thrown or weight to get a small line up and over the branch. Once the small line is over the branch, tie it off on the bowline loop, pull it up over the branch and pull the other end of the bowline rope through the loop, and choke the branch.....

I've been watching a tree next door and thinking about how to get it down also.
    Good thread!

For all the benefit of the kids in class you leave your tail longer when putting that knot to work right?;)

this was just a generic pic from the interwebz.....I have permanent loops in my bull ropes. But yes, you'd want a longer tail when using a removable bowline knot, and I'd recommend a figure 8 tied in that tail as well....
