I just got back from lower Michigan and saw this tree that had shed its bark and had a very smooth surface in place of it. It is a grey color for the most part and had been shedding it's bark for quite some time as there was no evidence of debris beneath the tree form the original bark.

    Is it a sycamore?

Looks like a Sycamore to me also. I just planted one in the corner of the yard the other day with a couple of the grand daughters.

I have heard but can’t confirm that Molted Elm looks similar.

Sycamore leaves are a give away some of them I have seen are the size of dinner plates.

Yep, we have LOTS of them here. Some are quite huge. They really love life by creeks/rivers.

Sycamore, a tree that usually grows in bottoms or wet areas. Some people call it the ghost tree cause of that white bark that shows as it gets older.

Definitely Sycamore. That's just the way the bark looks. No shedding required.
