I was resplitting some of my stacks to see what the MC was and I ran into this crawler. The series of pics are in reverse but you can get an idea where he came from. I'm not sure if this is ash or not. Anyone know?

Thats exactly what it is, thank you. Interesting, he was able to get himself out of the tunnel, roll onto his underside and after a few minutes, fly away

I would have made it the "squished " borer and never have thought twice about taking before and after pictures.

Interesting, wasp was my first thought, but then look at the head. Unmistakable beetle head.

I'm not a fan either but this turned out to be a science lesson of sorts for me. AND, I had no idea they flew until today either

We had something like this in the early 2000's, they were disgusting, huge. During the dead of winter from the wood WWW brought in they would somehow make it out from large tunnels (like someone drilled a hole wtih a drill bit), stagger around for a minute then fly at you. They were so big you could hear it when you killed it. OMG I have the heebie geebies just thinking about it.

I have these in abundance.... usually in my marginally dry wood. They creep the chit out of me....

That one looks to be a wasp. What wildwest is describing is a Wood boring wasp. Most likely of the Sirex line. invasive and was brought here from Europe. There are several European/sirex invasive wasp. Many sizes and colors. They invade both soft and hardwood.
