Never saw this before- I was splitting some wood the other day and happened to see this:
    Oak grain pattern (2).JPG

Toward the right / bottom of the photo the grain is pretty typical of oak, at least what oak I have seen. But the swirls in the top are a new thing. Anybody know what it is called or why it happens?

I have seen some things like this called Burl (spelling?). Normally I thought it happens on the outside - maybe it healed and grew over it?

I have seen burls before but never knew the grain inside did that- thanks!

It is a pretty amazing piece of wood. So special I saved one- half of the split.... will burn the other. Hey, it is nice but my firewood has to work for a living.... :)

Pretty neat! If there was more of it going on I would definitely band saw it and make a live edge like cribbage board or 2 out of it.

Great- now you are making me want to fish the other half of that split out of the wood pile. Unless it already went through the stove.... :) And besides, this is exactly what I need, a hobby of finding unusual wood lurking inside my hobby of splitting wood, which is inside my hobby of procuring wood, which is a large step in the hobby of heating my house..... with wood.

Would make an awesome breadboard. Maybe enough for a small table top? Like an end table?

I too have seen this but never paid much attention. It is sort of neat.

I've seen it also, usually near a knot so maybe it's where the grain gets interupted and can't grow straight.

Would it be known as "birds eye" grain? Kind of looks like it.

I was think birds eye oak too. More common in maple but I have seen it and referred to it as birds eye.

XXL did you turn those pens? If you did they are fantastic. Is that called a Cigar pen? Thinking about buying a lathe not that I have time for another thing in my life. I have a room about 450 sq. ft. that my wife makes Barbie furniture in with what I call toy tools. I can't believe how stress free she is when she comes out of that room and has finished a project and is listing it on Ebay for sale. Miniature table saw, belt sander, jig saw ,vise and so many toy tools, just watching videos of people turning wood is very relaxing.

Just what I was thinking also. I've seen it in crotchety trees.

That's a nice piece. Square off one side and pass it through the band saw, real thin, veneer like.
    Wonder what Shawn Curry thinks.....

We use to pay a good bit extra for crotch cuts to make custom gun stocks. CNC'ing them proved to be challenging sometimes too, sorta grabby even with carbide tooling.

Seen very similar in maple. We just call it curly maple. Don't know what causes it but it's worth a lot of money for milling.

Sorry no but I wish . Just a Google search. Did some woodworking and turning many years ago and a nice pen was always on my to-do list but I never got around to it. Maybe someday.
